Over-spray & Clay-bar Ques

Does anyone know if the Clay-bar will remove over-spray?

Just got my rig back from the body shop after a minor fender-bender (all they did was replace my bumper and one headlight, so no paint involved). The GD thing is covered in over-spray! Gonna call both the insurance and effin body shop Monday about it. And let them tell me it wasn't them, the truck is brand new with a little over 2K on the speedo! (Sorry for the rant, I need a drink.)

 

Clay bar should take it off, but it is going to take some work. I would recommend buying a good quality clay. Don't go to Walmart and grab one off the shelf there. Clays come in different grades and getting the right one could speed up the process.

How much overspray? Any pics?

Oh I'm not doing it, they are. It's really fine and clear, and the only way I noticed it was driving into the sun the windshield looks like it's covered in tiny, tiny speckles of something. I rubbed out a spot with my thumb, but it took some work. Then I inspected the other windows and window visors, all have the same very fine layer of over spray.

It's dark here now or I'd snap some pix. And tomorrow I'm in the mountains from sun up till sun down fishing, but maybe Monday I'll update the thread with pictures.

I had a C5 corvete that was the victim of some idiot spray painting a building across the street.

It looked like a speckled bass boat in the sunlight. They were unsuccessful getting the paint off, so the insurance co paid to paint the whole car.

Hopefully your situation turns out better than mine did.

 

Overspray on the visors? So your windows were down while they were spraying another vehicle in the same vicinity and got overspray on the inside and outside of the truck? If that's the case, wow..unbelievable. That whole scenario is just plain laziness and idiocy. Inside would be alot harder to clean than exterior.

 

I think he meant vent shades.

@ OP. Yeah clay will take it off. #000 or #0000 steel wool and glass cleaner will take it right off your windows. Make sure you don't get any rougher wool than that. If you wanted you could even use lacquer thinner to get it off painted surfaces. Either way you'll have to wax the truck again whether you use clay or thinner

 

Oh, I see..Shop still lazy with idiocy.

 

To echo what has been said, a quality clay WILL get all the offending speckles out.

I painted a pair of fenders on my old Xtracab in a makeshift paintbooth with my friend and managed to get the white paint on my black Subaru parked maybe 200' away. I spent a couple of days with clay and managed to get it all cleaned up.

I used this.

I had to polish my car after the fact due to micromarring left by the clay, but in the end, it looked like nothing had ever happened.

 

I currently use the Mothers Clay kit from Autozone, and it works well. Done properly it will not leave any scratches on the finish.

 

I would stay away from the steel wool option. It can and will put scratches in the glass. You can use the claybar on glass as well without any damage.

 

A mild form of clay will work some spray detail lubricant. Just make sure you get in all the lines & crevices of the body panels.

You could also buy a surface prep towel from autogeek.net. Those are a little faster.

Also, after the owverspray is removed I would go over it with a good cleaner wax by hand or if you have a dual action polisher.

 

We do it all the time at the body shop I work at. It won't hurt the glass at all as long as it's super fine steel wool.

 

You need to look at the glass under a microscope. It will scratch.

 

UPDATE:

So I took the truck back to the collision center that originally did the repairs and over-sprayed it. They assured me that they had a "really good detailing guy on staff that would take good care of my truck and correct the issue".

Got the truck back yesterday afternoon, still over-spray on it and they scratched my EGR window visors!

So I called my insurance company, and they had me take the truck to another shop where it is now. I'm about ready to give up.....
