OK. I've already started one thread on the hissing sound I heard in my yota, but I guess I should've cleared this up in that thread. I am a new and first time Tacoma owner. I've always wanted one but I'm a big guy and was afraid there wouldn't be enough room to accommodate a large frame. Now that I've got one I'm finding out some 'quirks' to the taco that I never had in my former gas hog Chevy. First and foremost is the 4x4. It seems to me that it goes in slow. Its erratic too like one time I'll switch it to 4x4 it goes quickly and comes out quickly then the next time the little light in the gauge cluster will flash for a good 30 to 45 seconds or more before it goes in. Takes as long or longer to come out. I read in my owner manuel that you do not have to stop to put it in 4x4 high but you do 4x4 low. As to the 4x4 high I've tried it both ways, rolling and stopped and works quick one time and slowly the next.its even jerked a couple times when I push the clutch in rolling to a stop. Is this normal taco behavior or is it something I'm doin wrong? Is there a trick to it that I've not figured out yet? I've a few more ?s too but I'll wait for input on this first. TIA

I have had 3 4x4 Tacomas and all went into and out of H4 easily... not always instantly but within seconds. Yes moving, but not at highway speed (do you need 4WD at highway speed?). The steering wheel position affects how easily it pops in or out of 4WD as well as the rear locker (if you are an Off Road TRD). Try from a stop, go to H4 and slowly accelerate... wheel straight ahead. The light will go from flashing to solid when engaged. You should hear a click or knock going in, and a 'thunk' when coming out (not always, but usually).

L4 (Low Range) is totally different... you need to be stopped (or coasting almost stopped is okay if a manual). You need to put tranny in N (Neutral), NOT P (Park) and then rotate dial to L4 (push and turn from H4). The same steps for getting back out of L4. If you don't use Neutral, you get a warning buzz and the light will flash instead of staying solid.

Again, if the tires are turned, it may not pop in or out of 4WD until you roll a bit and they are straight.

    It's the wife's T4R so it's stock
I see no question about exhaust in your post... however if you go straight pipe, many will ridicule you.
