If you or your wife don't know how to and/or are not mentally prepared to defend yourself ... whatever is in your hands can easily be fed to you.

Weapons are almost useless without proper training and situational awareness

Mace or pepper spray will slow almost anyone down

Wasp/Hornet spray will stop anyone almost immediately

As people used to say on Usenet; "Traveling unarmed is like boating without a life preserver." Sometimes you have to do it but it's not a good idea.

Do you guys live in Compton or something? I don't think I've heard of any one ever needing a weapon while in a car ever.

I've been in a couple instances where just letting it be known that I was carrying would have been nice. Both in and out of the vehicle. There are some crazy people out there.

I've never been in a situation where i felt like i wanted a weapon for self defense in or out of my vehicle, except for after hurricane katrina, we drove out to the gulf coast to help family members with a f-250 and a travel trailer loaded down with stuff (100 gallons of diesel, 30 sheets of plywood, 30 2x4's, cases and cases of water, and 40 gallons of gas and a generator.

But in a vehicle specifically, a member in texas had his door pulled open when he was at a red light, he had a weapon that he had access to from his seat, he pulled it on the guy and the guy fled.
    Ain't that the truth

In the first situation that makes complete sense. That is a really abnormal situation though.

In the second one couldn't he just drive away? I mean unless he's stuck in traffic but who the fuck is going to car jack someone stuck in traffic on a busy street?

I've never NEEDED a fire extinguisher in my kitchen, garage, or back yard... but there are a total of 6 available at those locations.

IIRC he didn't have much time to react, so it was go straight into the car in front of him or pull the gun.

It ended up being a homeless man (he thinks) that just was trying to get a dollar, but if it had been a serious robber (with a knife, baton, stun gun, or gun) he would have been prepared.

How so? I just have a hard time wrapping my mind around someone committing an armed robbery and then sitting at a traffic light 100 feet down the road.

It's a lot easier to jack someone when they are sitting at a red light than when they are moving 30mph.

Parking lots are another good place, but that's also where people tend to have their guard up and are more aware of their surroundings.

    +1

Must be nice to live in a country where you can walk 20ft in any direction and not bump into another person.

Your equating two things that are not even close to equal.

Honestly I don't really care what you have in your car as long as it's legal for you to carry it. I just find it strange people have such an obsession with carrying around weapons in their car for the protection and then don't have smoke detectors/fire extinguishers in their house even though a fire is literally 100x more likely than using a weapon in self defence.

90% of the population lives within 100km of the border and Canada is one of the most urbanized countries in the world. I live in Vancouver and you need to drive 2/3 hours to get out into the sticks without traffic. Probably nothing close to L.A. but still.

I've known a lot of people who have had the need to defend themselves. I've had a couple of "situations" (and one was at sea, not in a densely populated area).
But I only know of one person where a fire extinguisher or smoke detector would have made a difference.

I'll try to find a study that I saw the other day about the fire extinguisher statistics tomorrow. It was about how people will skip out on buying fire equipment for $100 and then go buy a several hundred dollar shotgun/pistol for home defense when statistically the need for the fire equipment is drastically more likely to be used. The neighbors had a massive fire a few months ago when using a barbecue and they didn't have an extinguisher.

Maybe I am just a naive Canadian but I just find people driving around who feel the need to carry around a weapon at all times strange. We don't really see that here, I do detailing at an auto body shop while I go to university and I have seen one car with a weapon and it was some douche who wrote off his truck while drunk driving.

Don't get me wrong I love the hell out of my guns it's not about that and I'm not trying to be a dick just genuinely curious.

To be fair though there is like 5? Mandated fire drills a year and extinguishers everywhere in the school especially in the shop/home Econ rooms where a fire would most likely start. If there was a fire a school is probably the best place to have one.

School shootings are sick people trying to hurt as many people as possible kinda hard to compare that to an accidental fire.

There was a member here a few years ago who was on the side of the interstate while in the middle of moving amd another car pulled over and attempted to rob him. He was able to shoot one of the subjects who pointed a pistol at his wife and MIL.
