How would having a pistol, and pulling it on a guy when he's about to stab you escalate things?
If you were pissed about your team losing (or whatever they were pisses about) and wanted to stab or hit someone, would someone pulling a pistol, or even just show that they're carrying, cause you to stop an say, hey, this isn't worth getting shot over?

That would de-escalate the threat to you.

I have a CC license so I am always packing a pistol in my truck. But, to keep on subject with the OP, if I didn't have one of my pistols I always have on of these on me, a Benchmade Barrage spring assist opening knife with a tanto point.

I really doubt it was just people randomly stabbing people. If your not out to pick fights you wouldn't be in a fight. I was down town watching the game and I got home quickly and easily. If your walking around picking fights while armed your an irresponsible gun owner and most importantly an asshole.

Like I said it wasn't a "violent" riot no one was out to hurt people it was more just break things and steal shit. The one serious injury was some idiot jumping off the railing at the stadium. Obviously if you were in a riot like the ones in L.A. it's a totally different situation.

The hockey riot is a poor indicator of regular life in Vancouver as it was premeditated by a group of anarchist hooligans and they were intent on starting trouble , the police investigation later discovered that a group of people intent on starting a riot whether the Canucks won the game or lost had moved into downtown with a collection of material to start fires etc . While it is true that a bunch of stupid people allowed the mob mentality to overcome their good sense and joined in on the looting etc , that is not what everyday life is like in Vancouver . Another point that basically never gets any attention is the hundreds of citizens that were so disgusted with what had occured that they showed up downtown the next morning and volunteered to help clean up .

So no , not a good indicator

Situational awareness & attitude. If that fails, I've got a 30" piece of heavy garden hose alongside the seat. I sometimes walk with a cane, but I don't really need it .

I've only had to pull my weapon once.

Also, like one person already said: I don't carry a weapon or any other thing that could be used as a weapon because I'm paranoid; just like I don't have fire extinguishers in my house because I'm paranoid of a house fire. And yes house fires are more likely to occur than a situation where one needs to defend one's self, but shouldn't one be (or at least try to be) prepared for any situation? I honestly hope I never have to use a weapon in self defense to harm another person. But if comes down to one of us walking away, you'd better damn believe I'm going to do whatever is necessary to make sure that person is me.

Right now, there are multiple knives in my truck, within my reach. There's also a crowbar in the back, and I have a great big rusty machete that is almost as long as my arm laying in the crevice where the bench seat splits. I don't aim to use it, but it's there if someone is threatening my safety.

You'll find people more eager to have protection from something/someone they can't control then something/someone they can.

For example. Most people just get liability+theft insurance b/c they are "protecting" themselves from an uncontrollable factor, (someone hitting them). Yet they don't have full coverage b/c they feel they can control their self and not wreck their vehicle.

For personal protection like guns, people will get them b/c they can't control others. They can't predict when someone is going to try and rob or kill them, so they carry protection for that very situation.

I know there are situations where people don't have protection for things they can't control, but usually the outcome isn't as threatening as immediate death or there is no way around it.
