I just bought a '97 4x4 V6 manual with 193k! It just got new tires, new front axles, a timing belt, water pump and clutch. Hopefully all these reports of 300,000mi trucks come true! ;)

98 taco with 198,000. Had the tranny drop a tooth in reverse @ 40,000, ran it for another 140,000, got a tranny for $400 bucks and dropped it in. Other than that, just change the oil every 5,000 give or take.

The thing I like about toyotas is that you can drive them until they stop working, replace what went wrong and go on with your life. I had a ford exploder that was the worst vehicle ever made. If it wasn't broken down, it was threatening to.

I will drive toyotas till I die.

(my work truck is a ford, though. Got an f350 and a f600.)

My brother has a '96 ex cab tacoma 4 cyl 5 speed 4X4 with 3" lift and 31" with 307,XXX. he has always done regular maintenance. the only problems he has had is his seat belt retracts and wont come back. and his A/C is broken but that's because of a wreck and he could get it fixed but doesn't wanna spend the money. No mechanical problems though (knock on wood). So that truck still has years left in it.

I am looking at tacomas, this one is not a first gen but I came across an 06 Prerunner, v6, manual, towing package with 289k miles. It is at a dealer listed for 9,999. How concerned would you be with this mileage? Also what about the price?

I have 98 TRD 4x4 with 178K miles. Clean truck, no rust, got Toyota inspect the frame and had no problems. V6 is running good and had been maintained properly by previous owner and I will be doing the same. Planning on keeping it for a while.

My friend has 88 Toyota pickup with 22RE that has 265K. But at 230K or so the headgasket finally gave up. So he redid the whole engine. Running strong as usual.

Have another friend who owns a 95 Camry with over 300K on the original 4cyl 2.2l engine. Auto Tranny is starting to give problems, other than that run like new out of the showroom.

Toyota engine, what can you say, specially those 22RE...perfect...keep up the maintenance and it will run for ever.

Hey guys, still a little new here so i think this is my first official post...

I got a 96 Tacoma with the baby extended cab 2.4 5 speed. My dad bought it new in 95 or 96. Other than minor tune-ups and diff services, tires, ect ect weve put a new radiator, fuel pump, timing chain, and 1 clutch. This truck has been the most dependable vehicle ive ever witnessed. It presently sits at...315,000. Long Live Tacos!!!!!

I've got 246k on my 1999 and haven't had problems outside the starter. Now if they would just make a hybrid version so I can buy a new one...

Since I was the guy who started this thread, I thought I'd jump back in. Checked my mileage today and I'm at 214,5000, just 17K from where I started nearly three years ago. Just changed tires on the truck, but that's been all I've done since July of 2008. I'm intending to do a coolant flush and change hoses this summer since I don't like some of the corrosion I'm seeing around the water outlets (and have been experiencing weak heat in the winter which I think could be related to some blockage in the heater core).

I was surprised that I've only put on 17K since that time, I guess my commute to work is really short! :)

I love this thread, makes me feel good about my truck's future. I've got 170,000 right now, had the new frame and rear suspension done, had to have a new waterpump and coolant, and one new ignition pack due to the waterpump failing and the engine overheating. I finally paid it off this time last year, so I hope it stays together and running for a good long time to come.

Only current issue is a sharp squealing when I back up in the mornings only, and yes, i've greased all the fittings on the driveshaft.

180k and the only issue was the starter failing at 130k. There is a 2000 taco that had 700k on it bone stock 5 lug 2.4.

seems like a lot of starters have been going out. I wonder if the previous owner already replaced mine since I bought it at 146k.

OP here... I've checked in a couple of times since I started the thread. At 218,035 miles today.

Unfortunately, I also got some bad news today... took the truck in for the frame inspection and...it failed. My jaw dropped when the service advisor came and said, "bad news...buyback". Based on the condition of the truck and my having been all over the thing from a service perspective, I never expected it. They showed me where the tech had managed to punch a 2 - 3 " hole behind the driver's rear leaf spring shackle. They wouldn't even let me take it home...

Waiting to hear how this buyback process will go, tooling around in a Corolla in the meantime. I'm really going to miss the Taco... only got to enjoy it for 3 1/2 years. Unfortunately, I don't know if I'm going to end up in another one... I've got another truck (not a Toyota) that hasn't been a daily driver but which probably makes sense for me to start driving more regularly.

Ahh well, sad day for me... :(
