Nice,,,, Only two tips for you First before the good wash is a gas rag wipe down to get the wax and road oil. I always used flashing tin 6 or 8 in wide by 36 long to go around the rim after the first set up it goes from rim to rim EZ also used a small piece to go over the valve stem. Always had to touch up the old VW rail rims and this made it quick..

 

This looks awesome! My wife on the other hand does not want me to do this. She said it looks ganster. I would have to disagree with her on that. I told her it's that or buy new rims.

 

Sorry but it just looks like your too cheap to buy rims and spray painted them. It is what it is...

Just came across this. I think I am going to attempt it, but I have a question. On my rims there is some slight bubbling coming up on the rim in places? I would guess some kind of oxidation. It has not yet broke thru the finish. If I do this, should I try and sand down to get the bubbling level with the rest of the rim? And if I do, would that leave a more ragged looking spot there?
I would hope to get at least 2-3 years out of this paint job before I get new rims.

Ah thanks a million. I just did 3 sets of Rav4 wheels (steel factory version) and after a couple of winters, all is good still. My son (24) particularly loves his painted Rav4 factory steel wheels and his friends say they are "gangster". I guess that's a good thing. I am taking possession of my "new to me" 2007 Taco 4x4 Access Cab next week. Will do the same paint job in the Spring when the warm weather hits, to these factory steel wheels.

I've had success with Krylon heavy duty spray paint in matte black.... most "gangster" looking. I've done at least 2 coats to all the wheels and let the hot sun get at them. Not a single chip or scratch! Life does not get better.

I was worried that if I did not sandblast them or do serious prep work, my dick would fall off (it's a metaphor... LOL). 2 years later, all of our wheels are looking good! I ain't complaining. Even get some compliments from my co-workers.

And yes... I painted over the lugs and center covers, too. LOL Just a blast of spray paint takes care of this every season.

Plasti Dip has always been my friend when it comes to painting parts on VW/Audis I'm about to do the taco wheels this week

 

If you do this with the tire off the rim, is there any harm in getting paint on the inside of the rim where the tire wraps?

 

never had it peel off anything I'm working with, gotta do 3-4 coats but I've had it on my A4 in Tahoe for over a year now, and it withstands a pressure washer... just my thoughts. You can peel it at any time without any stripping of paint... they offer numerous colors...
