LSD Differential

On an '09 Access cab 4 x4, 4 cyl., non TRD. If I understand things correctly, the LSD system really has nothing to do with the differential, it is simply a brake system computer that applies brakes to a rear wheel when it senses wheelspin?

So the actual differential is the same as a regular open rear? There are no clutches inside correct?

i dont know guys myy 08 the windo sticker sais "limited slip differential" not automatic lsd is it diff on sports maybe? all i know is i spin both tires in dirt.

 

On the '09 models, the electronically controlled limited slip is available as part of the TRD option.

 

I am looking at the brochure right now.

Automatic Limited Slip Differential (Auto LSD) is standard on all models.

Electronically controlled locking rear differential is on V6 models only and then only with the TRD package.

As discussed before, the Auto LSD is not a true limited slip diff , only a braking feature.

 

Sales dude stated the same thing when I was looking for a new '08/'09. Tried telling me that the LSD and Locker were almost the same thing, I told him not so my friend.

 

I am fully aware of the difference between a locker and a limited slip diff. The point is that what Toyota is calling a limited slip differential in their Auto LSD is not one at all. The closest thing they have to getting both wheels to turn simultaneously is the electronic locker.

If they want to call the Auto LSD a traction device, a wheelspin control device or whatever, fine, but its not a limited slip differential ( nor a locker).

 

so mine is mechanical lsd then i assume? good for off roading

 

Yes...The 08 is a mech LSD in the sports. It's better than nothing- you can use the e-brake as a poor mans locker...but I'd rather have an open diff with a locking option than the LSD for what I do...

 

i gotcha i was just curios if i would get stuck a lot with lsd instead of a locker.

 

At least on the 09,LSD does not operate in 4WD only 2WD mode.

So in 4x4, I guess you still have trac control.

 

Ok, what every one in the thread is refering to, is the ABS.. THE LSD is really in the diff....... For anyone that doesnt belive me, drain your diff oil, and put fill it with 75-90 oil, and dont add the lsd additive, drive your truck around the block. You'll think your rear end is falling apart. The LSD just senses the spider gears.

 

Do not concur- The 2009's ALSD is a differential braking system- A mechanical LSD is in the differential housing. ALSD uses the brakes to control wheel spin, where a mech LSD makes the gear adjustments in the differential.

You are right tho- If you have a mech LSD and you do not properly lube it you are going to think it's imploding. But this system is just the brakes...
