I have a Husqvarna 61 with a 24" bar

 

Wow that's a nice chainsaw.

 

I use the little brother of Oz's saw; an old Husky 51. Light enough to limb with or scrub brush all day, but heavy enough to work up the larger stuff too. I usually keep a 16" bar on it.

I've had good luck w/Oregon's chains, but their bars don't seem to last as long as the Husqvarna brand ones.

 

I go old school with 2 different McCullough
McCullough 1010 with 20" Oregon bar and stihl chain
McCullough 110 with 12" Oregon bar and stihl chain

got the 110 from my dad who got it from my grandpa and my dad never used it. got the 1010 from a close friend of the family as a wedding present. both came with original parts. i need to get the little one looked at since it doesn't seem to pump bar oil anymore, but it does leak it from somewhere. not sure if is it a broken hose somewhere or what.

 

My dad uses a McCullough 610 for working up tree trunks. He's got a Husky 455 that he uses as a general purpose saw, but the McCullough chews through thick stuff probably twice as fast. Of course, since he only uses it for trunk wood it's filed with a much more aggressive tooth, since kickback's not much of an issue.

 

I have a Husky 450 thats about 2 years old. Cuts anything that I have needed it to do.

 

Busted the glass on my jotul last night. Log slipped as I was packing it for the night right as I was closing the door. I try to really pack it for the overnights, and I had things positioned well. The door was less then an inch from closing when the top log fell forward.

Glass basically stayed intact, and I was able to empty the stove, and shut her down.

160 bucks for a new one. Ouch. Better then burning oil to heat this drafty house though

 

I have a lopi endeavour in our living room, works great, to bad its been like summer the past month here, looking forward to firing it up again.

Friend of mine needed a little wood, so we cut a cord of Douglas Fir for him. The tree was about 25" on the butt and produced the cord we needed and a little more.

 

I am jealous of that. Looks like a lot of straight grain for easy splitting. Also love how the truck squats a little but not bad under a full load of wood.

 

It was very easy splitting and had a nice straight grain. Even the butt-cut split with two or three pops. The wood was pretty dry (dead snag) so the truck didn't sag too bad.

 

People cut trees down for firewood ?

 

Most would prefer to let it season, but you can't get much better wood than a snag that has been standing for 4+ years in a drought ridden region. Or was that a joke OZ?

 

Most firewood around here is already down , I guess logs / tops are more accessible here

 

Gotcha. Between private property and forest service land, there is an unlimited supply of firewood in this rural area. By harvesting snags, the size, age, and quality of the wood can be selected as compared to waiting for a tree to break-out or blown down.

and ours is usually cut down , and logs deemed unworthy of sale / tops become firewood

 

"Cavity netsing birds," is that like a Turd Bird or Blue-Footed-Boogar?
Collateral damage is a necessary evil in life. Whether standing or lying, trees are habitat for something.

 

Woodpeckers , chickadees , tree swallows , owls etc

 

Valid point, and we avoid disturbing obvious habitat trees. As with British Columbia, we are infested with pine beetles (guess these attack fir as well) and the die-off exceeds the environmental needs. Environmental litigation stymies most sustainable harvest efforts in California.
