Sufferign thru the loss of my 2004 due to frame rot(missed the undercoating program so SOL) As much as i love tacomas am gunshy about buying a used one that will be rotted out in less than 5 years. Just curious about anyones input on what TMC offers on frame warranty on 2nd gens and what changes TW members feel have truly been put in place that keep this gen from suffering the same fate as 1st gens without any backing form TMC. thanks for the input

Rust issues remain for those living where they salt the roads.
Like the 1st Gen, Toyota is replacing frames when one is deemed unsafe.

    Not sure.
It's just now 2014 and last year a couple of guys with '05s got new frames.

I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket hoping that Toyota replaces the frame, if you should get one with an iffy frame. Better to be proactive about keeping the rust at bay than waiting for the inevitable.

    +1

No way I would purchase a used truck with any concerns on the frame.

Mine looks really good. I think the frames will last as long as you take care of it.

My 05 is at dealer now, waiting to hear if they will replace frame. It failed inspection, I'm the original owner of multiple Tacoma's, nine years old and condemned, Toyota must step up!

First off, never buy a truck from the "Rust Belt". If you apply rust proofing you shouldn't have any major problems.

If U have 2 ask U R not in it - B happy :D Anywhere it snows and they put tons of salt on the road all winter = tons of salt on a shity Toyota frame and if you R not fanatical about frame maintenance in a few years your truck looks beautiful but U have no frame. That's the Toyota way of doing things for last 10-15 years:eek:

    From Wikipedia:
The term Salt Belt refers to states, in the United States, in which large quantities of salt are applied to roads during the winter season to control snow and ice. States in the salt belt include Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Washington DC.[1][2] Other states such as North Dakota, South Dakota and Alaska are also considered part of the Salt Belt.

well living in the rust belt i may have to go another route which i never thought i would as i love tacomas i never thought i would buuy another type of truck. I t seems 2005s are already showing issues and im not sure that TMC is standing behingd the frames as they did in the past(or at least for as long)Does anyone know what the frame warranty is after 2004? And also does anyone know if there isa year where they seem to have gotten a grip on the frame issue?(myabe after 2008 and the buyback program)

From what I read on TW the year where they seem to have gotten a grip on the frame issue has not occurred yet:(

Angryseas: You should be gun shy of any Tacoma from the rust/salt belt. Chances are you will be playing russian roulette with several loaded chambers. As some posters have already mentioned, crawl under ANY truck you are considering buying and look around with a bright flashlight. Walk away from any evidence of severe rust.

I've bought two Tacomas since reading about the frame rust issues, and both times I told the dealers that I would NOT buy until they raised the truck(s) up on one of their lifts, and gave me a hammer so I could beat on the frame. Both dealers reluctantly agreed. Luckily, both trucks were local since new, so rust was minimal. The '97 had one spot that could cause a problem down the road, but the '06 was rust free a year ago. BTW- I don't live anywhere near the rust belt, thank goodness.

My '08 has NO rust on the frame, so I must not live in the rust belt. I do drive along the beach a lot though, but always rinse off after.

When I was looking for a used 2nd gen. I looked at the undercarriage, paint, engine bay cleanliness, and interior cleanliness. I live in CT and a few were really bad as far as frame rust. I found my 2010 about and hour away from my town and it was spotless. Come to find out it came from the southern US. bought it that day. I powerwash the truck atleast once a week in the winter and sprayed Amsoil HD metal protectant on the undercarriage.
