The problem with that is bandwidth and caps each month. Even if they lie to you and tell you you're unlimited (hint: you aren't), it's severely speed capped once you go above a certain amount, usually 2 or 3 gigs.

I here VZW doesn't do that so much with LTE as they do with 3G. I went though 80 gigs on 3G once before my connection came to a crawl.

The life of a contractor part 1:

I've been working on contract for this company now for 2 months. This is not my first contract with them. I had all of the access that I need. as of the 1st of the year, somehow I got put on a list to deactivate/delete. I came to work yesterday and couldn't even log in. I called the help desk and escalated to my leader and by 1 PM i could log in to the citrix portal to launch my apps. Problem is, i had no apps to launch. Another escalation and I was told they were working on it. I come in this morning and Nothing had changed. I talked with my leader and again they escalated. at 10 am I finally had more apps, not all that i needed but some that I did. Launch them only to find that rights had not been granted inside of the apps. So again I'm dead in the water. They are being forced by management to use their new tool from Oracle (I fucking hate Oracle) to delegate rights instead of just adding me to the correct AD groups and getting me back to work. Gotta love the life of a Contractor.

As one of the level 2/3 sysadmins that would get the escalation from the help desk guys: I feel your pain.

And yes, Oracle sucks donkey balls

I find it funny that they are willing to try to use this POS oracle product and keep paying them and me money while i do nothing. I could fix the issue in 5 minutes.

While not a contractor that goes from site to site, I am a contract employee for a company. It sucks for real. Get shit pay, no benefits, looked down upon during meetings, list goes on and on. Anyway, I know I took the job knowing it was contract. I was told this would be contract to hire though. Well, six months went by and still contactor. Spoke with my manager, who is in Ohio while I am in NC, and he says wait until a few more months. Well, nine months go by and still contractor. Get tired of it and get offered another job making a few more dollars. Nothing to brag about but not the best job and something I really didn't want. I call my manager up and let him know, he tells me that he "put me on the list" for getting permanent. I take up his offer and deny the other job. Well, year 1 goes by and still contractor. We all get in a meeting and guess what, they are cutting hours. While not alot, it's still getting cut. Everyone is made to take off 16 hours within the next quarter. Doesn't sound like a lot, but how can a job "hire" people permanent but cut hours?

After that I immediately started applying to anything that interested me. I got some bites here and there but nothing final yet. It's been 16 months and still a contractor for this place. Anybody know any IT positions open in the Raleigh area willing to help a fella out?

Ha, I did something like that. I scored a different job. When I went to my boss to give him the 2 week notice, he said, "why? How could you do that to us?"

"The job was contract. It got extended twice already. The new job has a private office. I'm on full time. I get benefits. I will work in an office, not a factory. They offer free training.....

    .... oh, and I'm getting a 150% raise"

    :D

    It was fantastic.

The POS oracle has to do with security pass the buck laws and Insurance. If they do not have in place the properly auditable "procedures" that show no one person can elevate peoples security levels ad-hoc then in the case of a breach the insurance is non-payable.

On the other side. I was hired by a contractor of a publically traded company to track down why a very old program stopped working. Within 15 minutes of walking into the building the contractors other employees put my name in AD, locked my ability to change my own password and elavated me to the Domain Admins group without asking the customer. Then he just handed my full credentials to me on a piece of paper with no shredder around. After finishing later that day before I left I asked the guy to remove my ID from the group and he said no, we setup a service using those credentials as well. Needless to say I documented this heavily and have never worked for them again. I don't like having my name linked to such a blatant security hole.

"Actually most of this is true, but everyone is leaving 1 very important detail: You need to have at least a dual-core processor, one core for each instance of Windows 7 32. A quad core would be better since you could allocate 2 cores per each instance. Also be sure you have adequate cooling for your tower. You may need to add an extra fan or two since it will be twice as fast."

    Later..
"Recent tests have shown that even with moderate use, a successfully hacked 64 bit installation done by joining two 32bit installations together results in the letter "e" running out."
"won't need the extra kick from 64 bit and you will be safe in the knowledge that the alphabet generator will be working reliably as well as the internal lettering wipers in your screen. "

Yessir. I compared the iPad mini (double the price for less functionality) and Air (I'd love the screen size, but really can't justify the extra cost).

The Nexus 10 gen 2 would be great if it ever came out, but I'm not waiting.... and the smaller size is starting to grow on me

I have the nexus 10, and it is great. There is something to be said for the smaller form factor. If you want to take it with you, it is perfect.

So Monday I installed my new Samsung 840 pro series SSD, the 256 gb model, replacing my previous Intel SSD. Absolutely incredible drive, took my reboot time to around 14 seconds, this is from clicking "reboot" to my login screen. If it wasn't for the post and bios, it would be around 3 seconds. It also maxed out the windows experience index for hard drive. It was 200 bucks for 256 gb, easily worth the money, I'm going to start buying them for our high end computers in the next few weeks.
