I am thinking of using a set of 4 factory 16 inch steel wheels that were spare tire wheels on 05-14 4x4's. My question is for anyone who has done this. Are the spare wheels as strong and good a quality as the stock steelies? My plan was to powder coat a crinkle finish black and do a set of Grabber AT2's in 265/70-16. Thanks all.

I did it last weekend... seems to be a pretty durable steel rim. They balanced fine on my 265/75-16 Duratracs. But I figured out a couple days ago there may be a better option. I only had 2 of the 16 hole spare rims - my spare and my son's off his 08. I had them mounted then went to salvage yard to get 2 more. I ended up taking the 16x7 spare off of a couple late 90's 4runners for $30 each. I knew they were 16x7, 6 lug 5.5, but I didn't pay any attention to number of holes or more importantly, backspacing. I found that the 4runner spare has 18 holes and appears to have less backspacing. As far as I'm concerned, this is a good thing - slightly wider stance without using spacers and still getting the "no bling" look I had in mind. I'll get exact measurements on backspacing in the morning and post. I already decided to go with the 18 hole - got 2 more coming from LKQ on Monday.

Here's a pic of the 16 hole mounted.

    Measurements confirmed.

    16 Hole 16x7 Taco spare rim - 4 3/4 backspace

    18 Hole 16x7 4Runner spare rim - 4 1/4 backspace

18 hole on back, 16 hole on front until I get the 2 more 18 hole rims from LKQ on Monday.

Thanks for the reply. I like the look of your truck. Mine is a 2014 reg. cab in white. I have 4 tacoma spare take offs at the powder coater now being done in gloss white, and will be running 265/70-16 General Grabber at2's. i will post a pic or two when it is all done. i am wondering what people are using for center caps on the stock spares.

Update. 4runner 18 hole 16x7 spare rim doesn't clear the front rotors on 2005+ Taco 6 lug. Back to LKQ for the taco 16 hole.

I found some 1/4 in spacers in my garage. Provided just enough room for the 18 hole 16x7 rim to clear the calipers. I'm sticking with the 18 hole. I have a set of 1" spacers for all four corners on the way. Giving up 1/4 inch of threads on the front lugs has me a little nervous.

I love the look. But I went white on white.

I have a couple loose 16 hole spare rims.. According to my scale, they are 24.8 lbs. I measured 3 times to be sure.

I just got my four together and will be sending off to powder coat next week. I found a place that said $150.00 for a set of four. What did you all pay for your powder coating? I'll be going with gloss black to try and replicate the original finish.

I just got my set back. I went with Satin Black. I'll post pictures if there's any indication that anyone is actually reading this or cares.

I'm considering doing the same set you as you guys! I like the industrial look of the steel wheels. I had an extra one laying around from my old truck. I weighed it and came up with 23.5 lbs. Seems very similar to the TRD alloy wheels. My concern was that they were going to be much heavier, but this seems in the ball park of alloy wheels.
