I was in the same spot, debating going with aluminum, really the workability of aluminum kinda drove me away. If something was to happen, and I bent/damaged the bumper, the steel bumper may be able to be fixed without completely throwing away the structural integrity. The aluminum is a different story. As for winching, the steel is going to be stronger, but as stated on some reviews on the relentless lowdown thread, the aluminum bumper has held up for a lot of people.

For me I am not really worried about weight at this point, so I went with steel, and don't have to worry as much if the bumper can handle something compared to the aluminum.

Hope that helps you out

I believe the aluminum should be just fine for winching. I dont have any experience with it though. My dad has an aluminum bumper on order from Eric for his taco, which should be done before too long. I should know more then. I know he is planning on putting a winch in it.

I've used my Elite front bumper as a winch anchor for pulling out both 1st & 2nd gens with no issues at all. Mine is Aluminum.

Generally speaking. What is the most effective for off-roading clearance wise, for tires and travel.

What is a ballpark estimate for a tube/hybrid front bumper, since they seem to mostly be custom fabricated?

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
see one you like and look in the vendors section on the main forum page. lots of good vendors on this site that makes bumpers and have prices listed in their respective sections. many will also do group buys posted in that section as well.

With the all pro off road bumpers and the heavier steel bumpers, does anyone notice it pulling the suspension down at all? I have a 3 inch pro comp lift and I dont wanna lose any of my level on my truck.

I lost approx 1.25" with my bumper and winch.
    Bumper--.75"
    winch-.5"
I'm not sure of the spring rate on the procomp lift, so I cant tell you about what you would lose. The OME 886 springs are designed for more weight on the front.

Im still using the coils that came with my truck, I just added a spacer with a new strut. Is there any way to avoid the drop?

Buy one of the aluminum bumper options, don't get a bumper, or get adjustable coil-overs for the front...

I bought adjustable COs so I could fine tune the lift to counteract the weight of my bumper.

    Lot's of stuff (-;
Well Ive looked and several different versions of winch bumpers on here and other forums, and theres some really nice stuff out there. What kills me is the shipping, and for those that are putting out some really nice bumpers the wait time is up to 6 months. So living here in the northwest (SE Washington) I tried to find what I wanted locally with little luck. I finally met this guy Gary and asked if he'd be willing to build a bumper for my 2010 Tacoma.

Gary is a military veteran that started his own business Red Goat Fabrication in Lowden Wa. He builds bumpers for a living :D. So far he's stuck with the big trucks, but I got him talked into building mine. My hope is I can help him out, and bring him some business. redgoatfab.com or Red Goat Fab on Facebook.

Ill update as the build progresses
Please take a look and help me support one of our veterans.
