Transmission issue ?

Driving to work today my tranny was slipping in 1-2 gear. Got to work and went for reverse and it wasn't there, then drive wouldn't work so I put it in 3rd and it crawled forward so i could get it outta the way. It didn't make any big noises. Any ideas beside a f'ed tranny

 

Check trans fluid first . Unusual for both forward ranges and reverse range to go all at once

 

Oh and it's 5 degrees out with negative windchills, 130k, and never flushed transmission since first couple years of dealer maintenance.

 

Alright, think trying to drive it home would be a mistake ? 25 miles. If it even moves after I get outta work to see if it's alive.

check fluid first . $50 bucks worth of fluid is cheaper than $3000 for trans overhaul .

 

Alright, there's a Napa next to my work. I've heard rumor you 'have' to use Toyota Fluid.. It'd be nice if the transmission had a dipstick. Never checked it before

 

Let it run and warm up then pull the check plug on the tranny pan, it should drip out or be right at the plug. I doubt (unless you specifically told them) that your tranny fluid was ever changed/flushed. The auto Trans uses WS atf fluid. Your best non OEM fluid would be Valvoline MaxLife, it's WS compatible.

I would say its time for a COMPLETE flush, not just a trans drain and replace.

 

That's from the Full flush thread, Make sure you pull the "sunken in plug" (the forward one) that's the Check level plug. Get it filled up to get it home and then soon I would recommend you do the full flush. I've got 120k on mine and acquiring stuff for the flush.

 

Yeah I know. Will probably make worse as I've heard.

 

Make it worse by dislodging "chunks"? I think that is more from a forced flush. The full flush described in the linked thread is nothing more than letting the transmission normally pump the fluid out and then manually pump fluid into the pan. I don't believe this method will make anything worse.

Lunch time update ! Leaking tranny fluid up front somewhere. Dripping on ground beneath the battery side of front of truck. Will not shift into any gears or 4x4

 

No bueno, check the hoses and where it goes into the Radiator/Trans cooler.

 

At least I shouldn't need a whole tranny rebuild.... I think.

 

Yea, I don't think that being low on fluid would hurt anything badly.

 

Truck just got a AAA ride home. I need a little advice possibly. The tranny hose coming from the top of the radiator was rotted out where it connects to the steel line. It has some wierd fitting on it not just a rubber over the steel line like the others. Is it some kind of restrictor ?

 

We'll cancel that. It was corrosion. The steel line rotted in half
