If I get one I intend to get my license so I'm legal

I was debating between a unit more like my cb mounted in my truck or a hand held one... Granted a handheld one wouldn't transmit as far but if there are repeaters that would help. Plus others have said if you roll your vehicle and it's hard mounted in your truck.... You might be sol, while with a handheld one you could hike to a high point and call for help.

Any radio recommendations?

 

I wanna go to tahuya but I cannot afford to drive about 3.5 hours to get there.

 

Man I really want to learn some off-road skills and I've wanted to go check out Tahuya for a long time but I'll just wait for the next trip. I'm very new to wheeling and I'm afraid I'll slow down the already large group.

It's really subjective; but I really, really like the Yaesu FT-1900R I have in my rig. Basic, and pretty much bulletproof.

I've gone back and forth on picking up one of those cheap handhelds also. But, yes - rolling my rig and being SOL has been a thought of mine. Although, I'm wired directly to the battery - and can transmit as long as I can get 12 V.

Truthfully, I've been in some pretty remote areas where no one was listening to the local repeaters. Most of the contacts I've made out in the backcountry have been Simplex 146.520..

Now if you really want to reach out, go for HF.

The person you get may be 2,000 Miles away... but you can be sure they'll make a phone call to someone that can help you.

 

To the both of you, what about riding along with others? I already have a passenger, and stuff in my back seats. If you ask somebody else, you can probably find a seat pretty easily.

 

Now I know who to talk to when I look into getting some form of communication for my truck. Is there anything you don't seem knowledgeable about Jake?

 

Yeah I thought about that, but my GF really would like to go as well and I just don't feel right asking someone to haul both of us around. Plus she had foot surgery a couple months back and she's still a little slow getting around.

I'm sure there will be many more meets in the coming months so I'll just keep my eyes peeled.

 

I was looking into this unit (actually the UV-5r+) a few months ago when I first started researching HAM/Mobile radios. It seems to have garnered some good praise among Amateur radio enthusiasts, so don't let the cheap cost or Chinese name/design fool you. I might pick one up if/when I ever get my Tech license. They hold classes once a month here, I just need to find the time to get over there...

As for groups, 13 trucks is a lot, but I feel it's not unmanageable and would really help with the entertainment value of the trip... if we do break into groups, maybe we could just put a little distance between them instead of heading in opposite directions? That way when we hit an open area like mud lake or the rock gardens it will give the groups a chance to catch each other to spectate and hangout while others attempt obstacles... if you do send the groups in opposite direction stick me with the more capable rigs and guys willing to hit yellow jacket and the rock gardens pleeease! I don't want to be spashing in puddles in 2wd all day, just saying lol

 

WTF is wrong with me! hahaha, sorry Devin...I had to read through the past 7 pages to get the list updated, and apparently I did a great job.

13 rigs is much better than 21 (as it was at one point), so we can most-likely stagger the runs and follow the same route. I think with the rigs we have going, either group will have a good mix of experienced/capable drivers who have a vested interest in running the loop and hitting the "harder" obstacles as well. The stock guys can park and hop-in or take pics for those if they want.

You should come! Tahuya is very easy!! You could spend the whole day in 2wd if you wanted to. All obstacles are optional and there are bypasses for everything even slightly challenging. If you're wanting to get your feet wet and are worried about holding anyone up, this is the place to do it... nearly impossible to slow anyone down unless you're trying on purpose lol

A winch is typically used when the mire factor on the stuck vehicle is great enough that wheel chocks are going to be useless. Essentially, the stuck vehicle has better 'wheel chocks' than the recovery vehicle.

I'd avoid putting stress on your steering components like that
