Transmission issue ?

Ok so now I have no idea how much fluid I have lost. Should I just fill through the fill plug till it leaks out the check plug ??? A response soon would be great so I can get this back together

 

Basically use the steps in the full flush thread. Start it, bring it up to temp (atf light on dash method), open the check plug, fill through the fill plug until it's a steady dribble coming out the check plug. Read up on the thread to make yourself more aware.

 

Can I just fill it cold till it dribbles out the check plug. Can't let the truck run in my garage for 20 minutes. It's 0 degrees outside. I've been reading a lot of the threads just unsure bc i dunno how much fluid I lost

 

The only accurate way is while it's running, pumping the fluid through the trans. The Full flush thread is the best thread I've seen to add more fluid that the 2/3qts in he pan (drain and fill).

Was it warm enough to work? You get it filled up?

 

The reason for the drive-neutral 3 times is to TRY and get as much fluid out of the torque converter as possible. Its actually a good idea, but take it easy, you don't want to burn your clutch PACs. The main thing is to get the proper fluid level and not to overfill. If it runs properly after the fluid level is back to normal you should be good to go till warmer weather. Hope this helps.

 

I beg to differ. It's actually to put the truck into the "ATF Temp Light Mode".

 

Hey just putting the new fluid in now. I put oil in till it start coming out the check plug then started it and let it idle then shut it off and checked plug again. Nothing was coming out so based another court and started it and it didn't come out the plug again. I'm up to 4 courts now. I haven't moved it yet

 

You're supposed to check it with it running.

I stand corrected. We used to do that to cycle the fluid out of the converter. I think that's what Toyota's doing with their atf temp check. Cycling the fluid out of the converter to get an accurate temp. Makes sense. I've only owned manuals with my Toyota's but did make my living as a major trans tech for gm. Again was just trying to help.

 

I did check it when it was running after the 3rd court. After 5 courts and trying to get the truck in a/t check temp mode still nothing coming out of the check plug. Going to get more oil now. I couldn't get the truck in temp check mode , it's f*cking 2 degrees out

 

I would grab the amount of fluid it takes to fill the tranny. It is always easier to return fluid then going back and forth. A transmission usually takes a while to get up to temperature especially if it is 2 degrees out and your just letting idol not driving it.

 

That's nucking cold, I think its a toasty 20* here. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes close to 10qts to get you back in business.

 

Derek is right, so is sandman. Get all the fluid you need and fill it while its running if you can. It won't even test for temp until fluid is in contact with the temp sensor. With an overfill plug you don't have to worry about overfilling it.

 

Well I took it for a drive and it shifted great. I got 6 quarts in and after I brought it back I pulled the check plug ( while running) and a good stream came out then it slowed down and just before it trickled I capped it. I should be ok if it came out the check plug

6 quarts to fill that critter back up . Musta been running low for a while or low on fluid directly from the factory . Sooo much for my estimate of $50 bucks to get you running again . I guess it beats the heck outta $3000 for a new trans .

I bet you would be interested in an aftermarket filler tube and level indicator .
Just pop the hood and check / fill the transmission like the old days .
When summer rolls around , you may want to pop the transmission pan off and make sure the trans is clean .

Dont worry about temperature check mode. Its more for under filling when your truck goes over 111F ...
If you do the check when your truck is at 10F its still good.
