This is kind of a dumb question but im curious. Just wondering what most people run in there tacomas especially the 2.7?? Im a conventional oil kind of guy just because I change my oil frequently enough that I don't feel the need to buy anything fancy. I also use the 5w 30 and was wondering if somebody has better results out of something different particularly when it comes to engine rattle and tick?? And how bout any filter preferences??

Is there a reason behind napa gold? Just a trusted name or something?

I use mobil 1 0w-20 with a purolator classic. Filter number is L10241. I do an oil/filter change every 5 thousand miles. Seems to be working well for me after 6 changes last year.

Any name brand oil/filter should be fine as long it meets requirements for your specific vehicle. The frequency of the changes will make a larger difference.

that has nothing to do with the brand of oil though. thats just one of the motors quirks. the tacoma tick. embrace it, love it, live it.

Has anyone tried running a thinner oil during cold season to cut down engine noise at a cold start? I use 5w 30 and my truck has a knock some mornings??

    I use Redline
A lot of people split hairs as to which ultra premium fully synthetic is the most ultra premium
I've got 223k on my truck and I wanted something with very high detergency... that's one thing that sold me on Redline, specifically
I don't think I've even heard my classic Toyota tick in quite a while; even with the cold

Mine does the same exact thing. There are some other threads that touch on this issue with the 2TRFE, most people attribute it to piston slap. I also use Mobile 1 5w30, the weight recommended by the owners manual for the older model years (2005-2007, maybe 2008?). Temps below 30F seem to induce the knock for me, which goes away in 30 seconds to a minute.

I think I might try some synthetic this go around and see if there is a difference in engine noise.

I use Redline 0W-20, and K&N 1 quart oil filter. This engine does tick, but I haven't noticed piston slap. The other 2TR-FE I had also ticked, as did my 4.7 Tundra, but no piston slap from either of those. The 1993 Toyota pickup I had with the 2.4 (22RE) did have piston slap when cold, especially if I put a load on immediately after a cold start. Piston slap that goes away quickly as an engine warms up isn't cause for concern. I had a 1976 Chevy that slapped when cold for 22 years, and never gave me any engine problems.
