I was under my truck this weekend working on my leaf springs and shocks and I took a better look at the trans and I think you are correct that there is a gasket on there.

I need to make sure before I go dropping the pan as this is my daily driver.

Completed. Took about 3 hours, including installing a Trans cooler. Flushed with 14ish qts Toyota WS ATF.
I've collected some fluid to send off to Blackstone. My kit is on its way. Hard mountain driving, mild off roading, no extra Trans cooler, 120273 miles.

Got my Tranny Strainer and pan gasket preparing for my IPT valve job.

    The V6 4X4 Auto has pan gasket part # 35168-60010 $21.98
The 6 speed uses the Toyota Fipg orange sealant.

The 4X4 Auto strainer/filter (if you decide to drop the pan) part # 35330-60050 $55.71.
    The O ring for the strainer/filter is 90301-31014 $3.10.

I'll start a new post with my IPT valve job instead of using this thread (as it probably should be its own thread).

Hope to ship valve body to John at IPT in two weeks. I'm currently scheduled to be off the road during that time...since I will be w/o a ride to the airport for about a week.

Thanks for the info. I have a 4x4 auto and my dealership sold me the FIPG sealeant saying it was all they used. It was like $21 too. I haven't opened the sealent yet. I'm gonna call them now and see if they will exchange for a gasket.

Update: I just got off the phone with the dealership and explained to them that they sold me FIPG and said thats what I should use. I then told them I had the part number and was pretty sure my truck used a gasket. He looked it up and said, "oh yep your correct I've got one in stock for ya". There gonna refund the sealant so thats good. I get so frustrated that you cannot rely on anybody but yourself to do something the correct way these days.

    Thanks again.

I will never go to my dealership and ask what part something takes. I'll either go to them with the part number or help them look it up on their computer.

The dealership near me says they do transmission flushes for $190, and that they have the machine to do it, not just the pan drop/refill method. I'm sitting at about 120k miles, I can't see a reason not to. Anybody else?

    Another good deal .
I would ask whats involved with the flush .
Do they drop the transmission pan and check the screen ?
Do they road test before service with the Tech Stream connected to your truck ?
Does that cover enough fluid to cover a complete fluid exchange , pan gasket , crush washers for the drain and fill plug ?

I've felt your pain with the dealerships before. In any case, I'm glad I could help and that's the beauty of this site. Anytime I do anything to my truck I research it on this site and I usually find someone somewhere that has done it before and was gracious enough to post their comments/suggestions.

Good luck with the tranny fluid change.

I used this DIY on my 4th gen 4runner with same transmission, so thank you to the OP!...

One note is that if you don't want to mess with the temp mode in step 10 and have an android smart phone you can buy a bluetooth obd2 and download the torque Pro app.

It'll show your tranny temps so you know you're in the operating temperature range when performing the level check. Much easier and just as, if not more, accurate since you can see the actual number.

I used Torque as well. One problem for the common person, at least with my 06 Tacoma, it does not automatically pick up the Trans Temps. You can manually add a custom Pid, found in one of the Ultra Guage threads.

I believe the app is only for droids right now.
The formulas are in the link I posted above. Will work on Fj 4runner or Tacoma of similar ilk. Good luck...

Did the flush over last weekend. I'm not sure on you other guys but on the initial drain I only recovered 2 quarts. From what I've read others are getting about 3. I also added a B&M cooler since I didn't have a tranny cooler on this truck. I put about 14-15qts (almost 4 gallons) in for the flush process. I used the jump wire on the OBDII port and waited an hour for it to come up to temp, but no luck. Outside temp was about 30'-40'F. So I ordered a scangauge to attain temp number. As I thought with the cooler it has a hard time coming up to temp from a cold start at idle. I put the truck in reverse back down 30ft, put it in D, drive back 30ft. After 10 minutes of back and forth I was at the 115' mark to unscrew the overflow/check plug. I had about a 1/4quart drop out before it started to trickle and also the temps started to then dip below 115.

I planned to use Toyota WS fluid but out of frustration with dealers and prices all over the place, I decided to use Redline D6 so far for round about town trips I see no difference on how the transmission performs. With the new cooler and outside temp at about 50' I'm showing 140' for the tranny temp.

I would recommend staying away from the cheap $10 manual hand fluid transfer pump to pump fluid from the QT bottle's to the tranny. Mine broke on the 7th pump on the 1st qt. What a F-POS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Truck out of commission and no way to get another one.... Luckily I had a larger pump style with a plunger that I used many years ago and had forgotten about, not sure the name, it is orange and black with a large hand plunger to force fluid back and forth. This one worked as it should, they are pretty common in the parts stores and run about $20-25

Hopefully my mistakes may help someone in the future. I picked up this 2006 truck with 176k on the clock. This site has helped me with guidance on what to do for fluids, filters, plugs, etc.. some of those threads are many years old but still beneficial. Thanks for the initial instructions.

My initial drain from the plug got me just about 2.2 quarts. After dropping the pan and removing the filter I got a littler over another quart for a total of 3.5 quarts. Having the valve body removed for a week waiting for it to be shipped back netted another quart. I'm not sure if the fluid from removing the filter would have eventually drained out or not as I proceeded with removal of the pan once it was slowly dripping.

The pics of the jug was the with the drain plug removed, and then after removing the pan and filter.

In any case, you flushed out the tranny with that amount of fluid. My truck took about 30 min at 50F in the garage coming up to temp using the wire to jump pins 4 and 13.

I also did this last weekend and I got about 2.75 qt initial drain. I used mobil 1 synthetic ATF. I decided to spend only $100 which came out to 10 qt so I only did two rounds of flushing and did not get the fluid completely red. I noticed a huge difference in shifting p/n/d and also running through the gears. Much more smooth. This is the first time I did it at 125k mi and I will deff add this to my regimen fluid changing regimen every so often.
