Locking diff

Well sir, you might be shit out of luck. EnolaGaia knows his stuff, and according to him, it appears you are SOL.

My only advice would be to look and see if you can find a LSD, or locker for the 7.5

I am pretty sure I remember seeing some around at one time.

 

Obviously a mech LSD can not be turned off.

I am also refering to Auto LSD which on 09's I believe is standard on all trucks.

Auto LSD and A-Trac are two entirely different animals.
A-TRAC is only available on TRD OFF ROAD.

Auot LSD only works in 2WD mode
A-TRAC only works in 4WD LO.

 

i have a 05 trd with a locking diff.. how fast can you go if you have it locked? cuz i hear everyone sayin ohh have to be unerd 5mph.. when i hit the desert i charge with mine locked.. have 40,000 miles on my baby and runs great..

There are folks who drag rails that run locked diffs...You need to be under 5mph to engage it (usually stopped to start I think...but idk).

You can run fast as you please as far as I know...

 

the only thing im wondering now is how would i go about wiring the switch for the lsd? i dont want it full time or ill be essentialy driving a soap bar. also the whole thing is that i cant find an aftermarket locker, and i figured it the xrunners are five lug wouldnt it be the same axle but only it has the lsd?

 

or if all the 09 tacomas have lsd standard i wonder if i could snag one of those? hmmmm

You are high as a kite my friend. A-Trac and Auto LSD both use braking to put resistence on the wheel that is spinning so that power is transferred back over to the tire on the ground.

It might, but it also might be for the Toyota 7.5 front diff. Go to the ARB website and look at an application chart.

 

The Rear end in the sport and SR5 is an 8.4" rear end.

Maybe we are nit picking over semantics. Your statement (top) says they (auto lsd and a-trac) are the same. where I agree they both use braking power to perform their functions.

My statement "They are entirely different animals" was more to the fact that Auto LSD is a 2wd function and having nothing to do with 4wd. Also standard on all trcks in 09.

A-TRAC is a 4wd lo function and and only available on TRD OR.

so is it possible to do some form of locking rear end on my 5 lug base model? i would prefer one with a switch but one that engages when one wheel loses traction would work too. also i dont wanna spend thousands of dollars.

 

If you want switchable there's usually only one option for Toyota if you don't have the factory electronic locker, and that's an ARB.

There are a few Auto-Lockers available. I've only really had first hand experience with the kind manufactured by Richmond gear; Powertrax No-Slip and Lock Right. I would highly recommend them over other auto-lockers because of the way they operate.

I really have no clue what differential is in the 5-luggers so you'll have to do some research of your own to find out what part number you'd need. Both ARB and Richmond gear have excellent customer service. You could give them a call and ask if they manufacture units that will fit your truck.

 

Right, but the TRD Off Road is listed as an 8" and the ARB won't fit in that without a new third member.
