Nice looking Tacoma Jeff. Welcome to the thread.

Went out with the wife and son to Lazy Boy tonight and ordered a sleep chair for the home work room. [IMG]

I will be ripping up the carpet and removing the wet padding tomorrow. I might just say the heck with hiring a company and do it myself. I may have to hire a dry wall person. I am not that good at drywall and it does make a difference to have a nice looking finished job.

    Hi Mike

use a shop vac or carpet shampooer to get the water out and lift the edge of the carpet and blow a fan on the area until dry. Take  neighbor's washing machine hose sprung a leak and that's what we did.

    Charlie,
I've given up on trying to figure out what's going on with the weather this year. Hope you get a break soon. Good luck on the Corvette green engine start up; I'm sure it'll fire right up.

What year is your Taco? You seem to have some issues :(. I keep wondering if my fan is going to act up, read so much about it. Almost funny yours seized and smoked while they were driving it, almost .I assume that was for the driveline shudder? Take care man, try to stay warm.

Tom this old boy (on the left) has been my pal for over 5o years. He went to Marshall when I went to Viet Nam. He has over 50 rental houses now and 2 strip malls. But the boy still hates to spend the $$. He showed us how to get into rentals back in the late 80's.. His $ is 300 to 500 k a year. We still do almost all his rehabs. The boy has to see the Pope to spend anything over 750$ ..Cut up the wet stuff and take it to the curb & get new its the only way to go..been there done that both ways.[IMG]

    Jim:
That would be my plan for the padding. Are you saying do the same for the carpeting or just dry it out and use a decent rug shampoo machine? I doubt if the rug pattern is still made so I might have to carpet the entire room. I also want to check out hard wood flooring.

Do you use duct tape to tape the new padding to the old or is there a special tape to use?

Duct tape it is.. Bad time of year up ther for you to be able to just take out the wet rug and let it dry. Even If you have to do the whole floor in one room at the cost of some $ to you you are still better off. Im not a fan of the new wood floors (layers of crap) and the cost of real wood is just too high for me.

    Jim:
Any value in renting a carpet extractor?

So my plan of attack is to pull the affected carpet back, remove and discard the wet padding, use towels to blot up as much water from the carpeting as I can, then let the inside air dry the carpeting out. During the last phase I will have the wet carpeting elevated from the floor and have a fan blowing under the carpet if I can find one to rent.

Once the carpeting is drying out I will work on removing the affected drywall.

Never used a extractor.. If you are going to save the carpet the pad must go..it will never get dry. buy or rent a good size floor fan to dry the rug in place. Make dam sure its dry before putting down the new pad.. The last thing you want under your roof is mold..When you think its dry put down paper towels & walk on them if they stay dry you are good to go.:)

Welcome to the thread Jeff [IMG] . Join the crowd in here when your in the neighborhood. BTW nice looking Tacoma [IMG]

If you do it yourself Tom, try Home Depot's rental dept. for a good squirrel fan. They can move a lot of air and help dry out the wet area. Is the wall where the leak happened an exterior wall? If it is you might have wet insulation [IMG]...I would get quotes from a couple of drywall contractors and have that work done so you get a good job (some things I leave to the pro's ).

Thanks Jim. The tip for the paper towels is right on.

Already rented a fan from HD this morning on my way home from the gym. I have the fan on the floor with the carpet elevated over the fan. Is this approach practical or do I need to blow the air over the top of the carpet?

I also have the option of renting a second fan. Cost of the fan rental is $50 for two days.

I plan on stopping by the store I do business with for the carpet work and getting the relaying of the carpet set up. I also want to check on the cost of new carpet for the room just in case I cannot get the carpet to look good enough. I already have my drywall person coming in on Tuesday.

I think I may come out of this problem with around $500 to cover my time for the work. Bet it ends up being $10 an hour for me. LOL
