I have a 2009 DCSB TRD SR5 I bought at the dealer Toyota Certified with 44K miles. I am now at 53K.
While driving at 40 - 45 mph. The trans downshifted and the rpm's shot up to about 6k. And wouldn't up shift anymore. Parked it for an hour and it was fine for another full day. Next day it did the same thing doing 50 -55 getting off the expressway after about a 20 mile drive. Took it to the dealer and they found two codes P02714 & P0776 after hooking it up to the tech's laptop.
They told me the fluid was low a quart and a half . I asked how it leaked out and they said there's no leak. They said it's a sealed system. All they did was top it off and clear the codes. I can't figure out how it got to be a quart and a half low with no leak. I'm stumped . I'll see what happens the rest of this week while driving it around.
    Any input is greatly appreciated.

Some trucks come underfilled from the factory...not a rare issue. Do some searching, you'll find the info I'm referencing

Hopefully this doesn't mean your shift solenoid valves are getting stuck.

Had this happen on my Accord Coupe. Vehicle went into limp mode. Hopefully for you the reason is that the ATF was to low.

I have a 100,000 mile warrenty so at least I'm covered if it is the solenoid.
It's an 09 and I can't figure out why it just started doing this and how the fluid is so low. Wouldn't it have done this all along if the fluid was low when I bought it 9 months ago ?

Check the rad for any sign of ATF, and if 4wd, check the transfer case fluid level.

Low temps could be a factor.

Truck is back at the dealer. Low fluid wasn't the problem. Now while taking off from a stop the truck jerks and lunges like it going in and out of gear. Unlike the original problem, this just started the day after they topped off the fluid. Waiting to hear what they find. I'm guessing by the codes they found it may be the solenoid . For now I'm in a new Camry loaner until they find the problem.

    Toyota planting time bombs ?
Seems almost every transmission complaint on this forum is caused by low on fluid directly from the factory or issues related to running low on fluid for extended periods of time .
I am sure Aisn Warner is telling Toyota to follow the proper fill procedure .
All I can think of - Toyota doesnt wait until the trans is up to temp and they send it out the door to the dealership .
Gonna start a new thread and tell everyone to check their trans fluid . A lot of new buyers are unaware of this issue .

I doubt its under filled in factory. It filled by machine with prefixed number. Since everybody seems to be short 2qt I would guess somebody who did engine oil change drained transmission by mistake. 2qt is pretty much how much drains from the pan.

I had similar problem, dropped at dealership and after they "refilled" and "level checked" still had problem. I said fk it and checked level myself. It was little over 2qt low. So I overfilled, gave little run to get rid of air from system , set level on low side and had no problem afterword.

yeah that's exactly what I got, truck would jerk going up the hill on cold. On big hills would jerk even at hot.
after I set level and put new fluid truck shifts perfect. In my case I knew it started right after dealer oil change. (wife did not trust me with her baby truck):D

Mine was about a quart low the first time I did the drain/refill at 80K miles.
No signs of a leak anywhere. I would highly suggest anyone with an auto to check their fluid level. Way to go Toyota.

I havnt been under my friggen truck yet as its -50 below . Purchased from a stealership with 80k/50,000 miles on the odometer . No issues with shifting but I have new fluid waiting to go in as soon as it warms up . I am unaware if the transmission was ever serviced but from what i have been reading , even the dealerships are not re-filling or topping up these transmissions properly .
I also agree with overfilling the transmission slightly . Getting ready to start a new post with a poll about new trucks being underfilled from ther factory .
Owned a transmission shop for 17 years .

We ran into one of the 4.0L 4Runners at work that appeared & acted (and was) like it was low on fluid.

Checked it, was low, added around whats been said here, 2 qts. Shipped it off and it hasn't been back. No signs of leaks.

If I had to put number, I would say its 50/50 chance dealership does correct job on refilling transmission.
I dotn really blame them. Process is quite stupid and pretty much can not be done in warm weather.

If its 80F outside takes literally 20 second to go over correct temperature for the truck. So as soon as you start truck you need to dive underneath immediately to take the level check bolt out. If you trip over the wrench you are FKD. Because now it will take hours for oil to cool down. Imagine doing this at dealership where customer pays per hour.
That level plug needs to be modified so you can check level while cold with engine off.
I waited until we got freezing temps to do this and still was pain to get to right temperature especially since I needed to run truck because I had to do drain and fill 5 times to replace fluid.
I actually had garden hose blasting cold water on transmission cooler to bring down temperature while engine was idling.

I was told (dont know how much this is true) that if truck was on the lot for long time, when they do pre-delivery check they inspect levels and if it was long enough they will change engine oil to new.
Now if somebody takes that level check bolt out when engine is not running, there goes little over QT of fluid.
