TRD is the same as the M1/K&N
OEM is $4 in quantity, so unless you buy Amazon Prime, add the shipping to that $5.74
The Toyota gasket is an o-ring and is captive... no chance of it sticking to the mount and being overlooked. It would be tough to argue that the Purolator media is better. It's good, but without an independent test of the efficiency....
There have also been some concerns raised that there is too much media, making the element too restrictive.
Don't get me wrong, it is a good filter, and when M1 had their last price hike I went to the PureOne until I found out how reasonably priced the OEM filters are.

As far as "Made in USA", keep in mind that Bosch severed ties with Champion labs the same time they went to the "Worse than Fram" E-Core design (the M1 and K&N are still Champion premium filters).
Bosch purchased Purolator and kept the production line.
The Purolator name is now a business unit under Mann-Hummel....
Tennessee and Indiana? Maybe some products, but they are primarily in China and Europe.

Again, not true in my instance. My Dealer charges $6.00 for the OEM filter with a 10% military discount. Unless I'm buying 10 filters on E-Bay, that's the only way I can get an OEM filter for $4, which I'm not fond of keeping 10 filters around as that's 5 years of oil changes and I doubt I'll have the truck that long. As for $5.74 from Amazon...easy peasy, I buy off Amazon enough than when it comes close to oil change time, I drop a filter or 2 onto an order and it's normally over $25 getting me free shipping, you just have to plan no different as if you were going to the parts store to buy a filter

The PureOne filter is made in the USA, don't confue the standard Purolator white can with the PureOne Yellow can. THe White can is made somewhere other than the US...China, Mexico...etc, but the Yellow Can is still made in the US.

As isaid earlier both the Toyota OEM and PureOne filter are very good filters, but I would argue saying the Toyota filter is better. Something of note, Toyota contracts their filter manufacturer to Denso, who subcontracts the filter to Full a company out in Thailand.

needs to be over $35 now for free shipping :( (on Amazon)
OEM filters are more expensive than the PureONE filters from amazon in my case, cause the only one thats available from my dealership is the OEM DENSO filter

I'm on my second tacoma. First was 1999 that I bought new and modded with pretty much everything at one time or another for 14 years. Toyota bought it back due to frame rust. New tacoma is exact same truck down to the black color with alpine nav/dvd, tint, de-badged, and softopper, so far.
I was told by a few different Toyota parts guys and mechanics when I bought my 1999 Tacoma new that the Toyota filter was at least as good as any aftermarket filter on the market, so I've been buying them by the case since then. The same filter fits my new 2013 even though the engine has changed which is good because I still have half a case. Thanks for the article which pretty much validates my 15 year old decision to go with the toy filters.

just picked up a case of 10 oem toyota filters from the dealership located in flemington NJ for 39.80, or.. $3.98 each! almost a steal! plus tax, it was 42 and some change.

i called and asked how much they were and he said 5.50 each,
then i asked if i bought in bulk would there be any type of discount. he said yeah i could probably hook you up, so i went. come to find out he is prior service air force, and some how he saw my military id in my wallet, and that started a whole new conversation, after some bs'in, he said take this to the cashier/receptionist and pay, i look at the receipt and it said 39.80 for 10 filters!

im good for the next 50k+ miles

Seems Mobil 1 and K&N are obviously just stamped to look different. I have heard this rumor as well with some if not all of TRD parts.

I'd go ahead and use it, but next time, specify the YZZD3.

    They're all compatible.
Toyota does have a couple of smaller filters used on the Rav4, Echo, Corolla, etc... but all Toyota trucks since the beginning of time have used a standard base filter that is compatible with the old Motorcraft "FL-1A"
The newer filters are smaller diameter, but the fitment is the same.

On the height of the filter, I haven't opened up a Toyota filter to see, but on Amsoil filters, it doesn't matter if the can is 3" tall or 5" tall... they both get the same guts.

I certainly appreciate all the info concerning oil filters. I just got my last free Toyota Care service done last month, so the next one (and countless to follow) are all mine.

I'm definitely going to go with either the PureOne or the OEM since that seems to be the consensus I've tabulated from this on-going thread. The deciding factor probably going to be $ and convenience of purchase location.

That said, I used Fram on my previous truck ('97 S10) and never had any issues through 312K miles, changing oil every 4K. And I've seen it being driven by another owner since I pretty much sold it for junk. It wasn't worth it to me for the cost of fuel pump, tank and all fuel lines being replaced, including labor. That's when I got my 'coma.

Thanks for everyone's input. I mostly lurk here, but find plenty to mull around when I do.

Convenience of purchase will also put you in The Napa range I would suspect. Napa Gold 1348 or the Napa Platinum 41516, which is 1/2" longer than the OEM or the Gold. I run the 1348's and have for years.

FWIW, We use a no bypass Napa Gold on a 780 cid $75,000 Gene Fulton Nitrous pro mod motor with 70 psi oil pressure using Brad Penn 50wt racing oil, and have yet to push one apart inside. I couldn't believe it,,till I seen it first hand.

It's safe to say it will provide the necessary protection on any vehicle or motor.

In addition to cars and light trucks' we have heavy equipment and tractors. So the filter argument has been a topic between us for years.

Have seen several filter comparisons; and they just about all fit in line with the observations on here.

Certainly there are less effective ones, and cheaper ones; but price doesn't always determine quality. I don't know which ones actually Work, better than another. Sure there are obvious visual differences.

If you don't feel good with one or the other; my suggestion is change it more often.

Many years ago, I bought a used junker that took a very standard filter. I had several new filters in my shop that I wasn't really planning to use. I decided to see if one of them would clean up the dirty oil in the corolla. I installed a Fram filter and ran it for about an hour. Of course, it was a subjective test but I really couldn't see any significant improvement. Also, the Fram didn't have an anti-drain back filter and when I took it apart, part of the paper element was torn. I don't think they know which vehicles need the valve. I installed a standard Purolator filter. After an hour, the oil was perhaps cleaner but still dirty. I installed a Lee filter. That cleaned it up noticeably but it was still dirty. (I don't think Lee is around anymore) I then installed my last filter, a Hastings. When I checked the dipstick, at first I thought there was no oil on it. Dipping it again, I looked closer. The Hastings had so completely filtered the oil that it was light golden in color. Upon disassembly, the filter was very well made. I continued to use them and extended my change duration. I have also used some Purolator One filters
I use OEM Toyota filters for warranty purposes now. I don't know if the Hastings filters are still exceptional or not. I know they make a high end filter with a filter inside the filter design but they are expensive.
I don't know if the square area of media is a totally valid way to compare filters. It probably is.
The Purolator One filter specs are available for what percentage is trapped at different micron specs. Most filter specs do not relate to a small enough particle.
It would be cool if you looked at a Hastings. I'm curious if they are still exceptional.
