Yes that's what I was getting at, and after I see Monte's design that is what I would be calling the "gusset" but I've seen other swingouts made with round tube that use something a little less strength wise but get the job done. Went back 2 pages in live and found this

Thanks for the gusset ideas.... I'll see if I have any 1/4" steel plate to add the gusset to the plate and I'll just cut a short piece of tube for the other gusset

If I have any 1/2" steel I'll gusset my gussets ;)

1/4" is overkill on the plate. But if you've got it, use it. I used 3/16" on mine.

I'll see what I have laying around not sure what I have on the scrap pile... Is one gusset enough for the plate, or is 2 on opposite corners a better idea

A single gusset on the plate should be enough. The more important one is the triangulated piece to support the horizontal piece that the plate is welded to.

hey bud I was just playing around with my welder and discovered some things.. I'm pretty sure it has flux core wire in it, so I've been using gas for no reason.

    the wire is .30
i dropped the tank off to get refilled with ag25 (75%argon 25%co2) and when i pick it up i'll get a roll of solid wire.

you've been using a mig welder right?
do you know what size wire and if its solid or flux?

I feel like i've made a lot of progress today in the quality of my welding so now i'm just trying to make sure I have everything set up just right and then I'll be ready for a project of my own :D

    Yes, I've been using mig.
I'll check when I get off work... I know I'm not using flux core but I'm not sure what size wire is in it right now.

I'll ask my dad what mix he has in the tank right now but I think it's either 75% argon, 25% co2 or it's just 100% argon.

I'm almost out of gas so I'm gonna have to get it filled before I finish the tire carrier.

 what ya thinking of building

I think I want to upgrade to a 220 mig and then build a trailer but that ultimately comes down to whether my dad will part with his 120 and go halfzies on a 220.

Why upgrade to a 220? To be able to weld thicker metal? I'll have to check with Adam but I'm pretty sure the welder he built his trailer with is just a 120. Looks identical to mine but I couldn't read the model #

Even so, my welder can weld up to 1/4" with flux core and up to 3/16" with solid wire according to the cheat sheet on it. That should be thick enough for anything I want to do with it.

And yea.. After reading Adams trailer build, I think something very similar will be in my future. Seems perfect for most of the camping we do where having to pack up the tent everyday sucks, and it limits what I can bring since it's on my roof. I can't bring a kayak camping because of it.

Are you talking about my trailer? It was built with a 220v welder.

Oh shit I didn't realize I could only go kayaking with you gramps

Yes. Learned that today. Millermatic something

Oh ok. Looks the same as mine which is 120v.

If I build a trailer like yours I should still be fine since mine can weld 3/16". And it says I can weld 1/4" with flux so for reciever hitch and such I would assume that will work.

mostly because I have 220 outlets easily accessible and it means I can weld longer at a time, It seemed like any long welds I was doing that toward the end of them I was losing power if that makes sense.

Not to mention with the max on the 120 being 1/4 I would assume you have to be real good to weld 1/4 correctly . with the 220 I would assume 1/4 would be easier to weld but thats all assumption

You need roof rack for hoe runner now
