exactly. not a part to cheap out on at all - beat tie rods will lead uneven tire wear even if you are within alignment spec.

Yep. I had to replace my tie rods because I had a bad inner at like 50k miles. I could hear it pop everytime I hit a bump. When I got it out I couldn't believe how bad it was.

 

that could be what's effing with my steering too, though I shook the life out of them and there was ZERO play. I had a tough time getting the taper to seat on the OTRE when doing my suspension overhaul last month, cool trick I learned is to use a pair of channel locks to squeeze it into place, a lot easier than jacking under it.

 

What if I told you that I made art work out of old auto parts. Would it be OK then? Just joking, I don't have time for that shit, I just want them as spares.

 

Lol, I wanna make stools from my old coil overs, they aren't good for spares anymore since the shock sand top hats are butchered.

i know we have different trucks but you shouldn't need to jack under the tie rod or use channel locks.. just move it into position and rotate the spindle till it lines up, then push it in and tighten the nut

as spares i guess thats alright but id say get new ones as spares and then when you need to swap them out you have good ones on there and can then get another new set as spares incase you need them again. why do the work twice?

swap on old one as spare, then have to replace it with a new one, when you could just swap on a new one.

Tie rod replacement is not the most difficult job but i would not intentionally put on a "used" one just to have to do it all over again...

 

Yeah, in theory. The stud just kept spinning in place and the nut wouldn't tighten..

Also fuck my tire isn't holding air. It's a super slow leak and I can't see any visible puncture and it's too icy and snowy for the soapy water test. Gonna drop it off at fire stone later.

Meh.... I'm not buying brand new parts as spares. I don't have the $$$ nor the need to stock more parts than I already have for this turd.

Ill do the same when it warms up and I put in new CV's I got a few weeks ago. I didn't buy three new because Ill just throw the best used one in my truck if I ever go wheeling again.

I get what you guys are saying, but tie rods take 15 minutes to swap out and if you need one, or a belt, or a pulley on the trail believe me the last thing you would ask is if it was "new" when I handed it to you. You'd just be happy to be making it home.

Patch's are better then plugs anyway, but you could still find it in this weather if you really wanted to. Just need some windex, plugs, and some air.

I like that stuff. Wouldn't want it all over my yard, but some select pieces in my backyard would be really cool.

 

Yeah, i'd rather just pay the 20 bucks to get it patched by them. Just praying it isn't another case of the dura-fail sidewalls. These tires are new and wearing very well. + I get alignment at firestone anyway free. I think the art is really cool too. I'd love to have like a wall piece for my imaginary garage.

If you are going to take the time to get a patch, find a place that will do a patch plug. It's a combination of the two and is a much better bet. Especially in this cold weather when the patch doesn't always seat right on the inside of the tire.
