Whelp, Time to eat some crow and man up... especially to Mike and jamie.

There are observation holes on the back plate.... I looked twice and never noticed them... I pulled the plug for these pics.:)

Well don't I feel like an asshole now. Anyway, thanks guys for hearing my rant and the kids at the dealerhip are ok, even though I measured a bigger shoe thickness (it is tough to see though).

Not a prob mike. It is hard to see. I sometimes vertically rub the shoe with a pocket screwdriver to see where the material is and the shoe back begins. Just a little info for future checks.
    Your good to go..

I guess he deleted his post after actually looking at the backing plate after posting that bit of wisdom.

I use to fly out of there. Did my training there too.
Type rated (I think that's the term) in 5 aircraft and have my float rating..

    Glad you found them!

But I will say, if you want to "check the brakes" properly you need to pull the drums off. Shoes wear more in the middle, which you can't see through the holes. And you can't see the face of the shoe which is critical too. Another thing is the wheel cylinder...if it's leaking you can rarely see though the hole. As well as all the linkages and the pins, if they're straight, everything together correctly etc.

Hey don't disrespect my journeyman brothers.

Just kidding. There's so many techs out there that shouldn't have their license.

Well at least I got to look at the wheel cylinder and spray everything with brake cleaner.

I'm still a little pissed at myself for not noticing the hole plugs. Friggin' New England weather and salted roads and salt on my undercarriage.... Yeah, I'll blame it on that, that's it :D

    Lesson learned

I usually go to Mooshead Lake in late summer for the annual fly-in. Good people up there. The Canadians come down too. I have some pics in my gallery from there.

Float rating is one I thought of getting in the distant past, but never did. It's nice to have it on your cert. though.

Did you actually think that they looked at your rear brakes through those holes? Mark your tires sometime and you will see that they don't even bother to rotate them like they are paid to do. Your lucky if they replace the oil filter when they Change the oil. I say this from my own experience. Mark your oil filter and tires before you bring it in for service and you will experience the total Toyota dealership experience.

Nothing like it... My fav was flying in and fishing off the floats while having my feet in the water.
It was only a 10 hour add on when I did it...

I love to see these come in.
I write little notes on the filters and tires.
    Sometimes I get pretty creative.

I have marked my filter before... they always did change them.
I'm sure there are a couple of bad seeds out there, but I can't brand EVERY kid in the quick service section as being lazy.

Here's a funny note about the service kids.... I had my 'free' oil change done last year at Acton Toyota in Littleton Ma.

Some Spanish/Puerto Rican kid drives the truck to us outside. I thank him, my wife and I get in the truck and I start it up. The radio was off, so I turn it on and the radio friggin' lights up at concert volume.... playing Latin music!

... I turn it down and my wife and I look at each other laughing our asses off. No, I didn't bother getting the kid in trouble. They are all very pleasant. :D
