So I bought a 2014 Pre-runner 4 cylinder 4 speed auto... I have been trying to baby during the break in but i have put 1200 miles on it in the week that I have owned it... and i cant help but take every random trail i find. I have always wanted an "expeditionary" truck and I feel as though it may be under powered and 2wd will hold me back... I have never had a problem with the trails I have found... some of them have been pretty hairy. any thoughts or suggestions?

Correct me if I'm wrong but with the 2nd Gens , aren't Prerunners , 6 lug trucks with the same suspension set up as the 4WD trucks but without the 4WD ?

I have a 2013 prerunner 2trfe (4cyl) 4spd auto 2wd DC. No regrets at all for what I was looking for. I didn't like how the manual drove so auto it was. It's my daily driver and carries all the stuff I need. I drive like 99% highway so a 4X4 was just something I didn't need at this point of my life.

Do your have a regular, AC, or DC?? As far as an expeditionary truck a lot of people will say trade it in and get a 4X4 etc etc. I would be cautious trying to off-road or have a friend trailing with you that can pull you out incase.

Where are the pics at lol

Correct. Differences are then obvious: no 4x4 components, different tranny. Carrier bearing location is back a bit as well as tranny mount because of the transfer case

Its a double cab, I posted a few pictures of her in my profile... maybe i jacked it up... anyways I also drive state highway majority of the time. I was looking at a shrockworks custom bumper with winch in the front AND on the rear for self recovery.
But thats always a good idea anyways I guess

so a future straight axle transplant is a possibility (post warranty)

I see the pics now forgot to open profile. I was expected pics inside the thread. If you feel you don't have enough power from the 2trfe you can always visit the URD website and get the supercharger.

To answer your question It's only a bad choice if what your expecting your truck to do something it's not capable of. I came to Toyota looking for an SUV and left with a truck. 20xxx out the door for a prerunner was a good deal to me so I took it. Added new fenders, rims, wider tires, fog lights and bed cover, tube steps, and very pleased with the outcome. Always get compliments on the road.

get a 4wd maybe? seems like the way to go if you are hitting 'trails' and not just dirt roads. sucks to have to use the good old 'momentum' mod to get through or over stuff and breaking stuff due to no 4-lo.... unless you just keep what you have and put a winch up front and carry a lot of extra cable/rope.

Yeah, trading for a 4x4'd probably be your best bet if you're going to keep riding trails. Prerunner's better than regular 2wd, but eventually, you're going to find a trail to get stuck on, and you'll wish you had 4wd.

Sounds to me like you would be much more comfortable with a 4wd truck. I would hate to get far into the woods only to find something that a 2wd truck can't make it through and have to turn around. Just my .02 :)

Maybe Prerunners north of the border all have V6s. I have a 2013 base Prerunner with the 2.7 and automatic. OP, I've always heard it said that 4WD just means you get stuck further off the road.

I have a 2007 4Cyl Prerunner SR5. No regrets at all. Truck is very capable for most (normal) things. Saw a guy take his off-road up some wicked terrain. I think he changed out the lower gear ratio. Pulled him up with no problems.
