And if you want to build a vehicle and sell it you won't have to... Oh never mind.

    I see...

What you'e just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Guess that does not apply to the aluminum Audi's that have been around for years and the aluminum sub frames under most of the new cars and the aluminum parts on the Toyota's. After seeing what the repair shops have to go through to repair/replace any thing on the newer Ford engines I know I don't want one but I'm all for more use of aluminum.

It will be interesting to see what insurance rates do on the 2015 F150's. I would think that body damage is going to be remove and replace as the panels will most likely have to be heat treated after stamping? Maybe someone more knowledgeable on metallurgy will have better information on this. Also I would imagine that the replacement panel market is going to be a Ford exclusive for a good while, sure to make the insurance companies unhappy. It has been reported that Alcoa is the only supplier to meet Ford's requirements. Another chance to raise the price of repair parts. Here in the salt belt will the al panels end up like my al wheels that were corroded and replaced under the 3 year 36K warranty and were the same 18 months later? This may be the new thing but I won't participate in the experiment.

And yes I am aware that many cars have al body panels and have for years but I'm not in the economic class that can buy, maintain and insure an Audi, Ferrari, Jaguar, Aston Martin, etc. My Tacoma is my daily driver which includes crappy winters with an abundance of salt and abrasive sand.

Aluminum doesn't rust. Is the big aluminum bar in the front of your Tacoma corroding? The modern metals are nothing like they were years ago. Aluminum is far easier to reprocess than steel that is what is bringing the price and weight down and there is millions of tones of aluminum being reprocessed every year from cans, wheels and old engine parts. Most of the collision parts are replaced now, it cheaper than fixing them so a aluminum panel will be just as cheap to replace.

I saw an article the other day that dealers have to buy new equipment for working on aluminum. Ford is giving their dealers a 20% discount on equpment and training through October to get them up and running. Apparently they also need a separate area separated by a special curtain system to avoid contamination from the aluminum.

So, it appears to be some hassle to going the aluminum route.

Yeah, but that isn't what they are talking about. You need separate tools for aluminum and steel and a way to keep dust from steel and aluminium apart, i.e. dedicated space, etc.

    http://www.fenderbender.com/FenderBender/January-2013/Reserved-for-Aluminum/

There is definitely going to be higher costs involved for repair work, which will in turn lead to higher insurance costs, which also leads to lower trade in values/residuals, meaning in the end higher costs of ownership.

Some (all?) of that will be offset by lower fuel costs.
