That's why I said what I said, he has an 18-55 and a 55-250, 18-250 encompasses the 28-135 and it isn't like you're getting L glass. There's no point in switching between 3 lenses that all that cover the same focal range.

Take a wide angle with 18-55 okay now I need to get more zoom, put on the 28-135, oh crap not enough, put on 55-250.

Now you reduce one step by not buying that lens, the glass in it isn't going to be much better either.

None yet, but its about to get rolling.

I guess that was my question in that is it really any better than what I have. The answer is no. Saying that. What lens should I look into next. I know I want a lens that can shoot macro.

Is there a huge difference between f3.5 and f4.5?

Assuming you'll get a crop sensor camera I would get a 35mm 1.8 (close to 50mm equivalent) as your next lens. Cheap kit zooms will come and go, a fast prime will stay in your kit for a looong time, possibly even forever. I don't know Canon Macro lenses so I can't give any advice there. I have a N(ee)kon :)

3.5 is faster but not enough to make a difference with a zoom lens

2/3 of a stop is 2/3 of a stop. It'd be a more heated debate if it was between 1.4 and 1.8 but I'd take the fastest lens I could get if I was getting a zoom.

I guess my question was how much better is that lens than my kit? Enough to sell the kit and get it or save my money and get a 50mm f1.8 or something along those lines.

I'd pass on it, personally. It's really up to you. Do you feel like your kit lens is holding you back or like you have more to learn before it is?

    1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2, 2.2, 2.5, 2.8, 3.2, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5.0, 5.6, 6.3, 7.1, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22.

Primes are usually 1.2 to 1.8 and sometimes 2.8 and affordable zooms are typically in that 3.5 to 4.5 zone whereas the more expensive primes are 2.8 or even fixed f/4. If you're looking at a lens with f/4-5.6 on it there is probably a little faster alternative.

Keep in mind if you have a crop-sensor camera you have the same light gathering capabilities for example on a f/1.8 lens as you would with that lens on a full frame sensor, however your dof at any given aperture is going to be multiplied by your crop factor (1.5 for Nikon and 1.6 for Canon) so this is either an advantage or disadvantage depending on what you're shooting.

I think I still have a lot I can learn on what I have. Save my money for better glass/camera

I think that is the wisest choice. Get a body and use the kit lenses until you've realized they're holding you back. By then you will know exactly what lens it is that you have been itching for because you will have developed a taste for something in particular. If you get super into landscapes you can then pick up a Ultrawide. If you get super into wildlife or sports you can pick up a nice telephoto, but for now, just grow and learn and start saving haha because this is not a cheap hobby at all!

Give me about a 20, 50 and 90 and i'd be good for 90% of everything I like to shoot ha

I know 35 is a SUPER popular photojourno/street style focal length but I just couldn't get behind it when I borrowed the one for the Olympus. Always too wide or not wide enough for my personal taste. I get it in the city, but here where it's less crowded a 50 acts like a 35 in that you're not usually right up in people's faces when walking down the street here ha

I agree. I just need to use it more. Shoulda put it on at the auto show i was at.

For the climbing stuff i shoot it doesn't work well though.

I like playing with it though, the DOF is awesome.

Picked up a used 70-300 EF from a guy on craigslist today for $200. Snapped this while I was testing it out, so it wasn't a hard decision. Real happy with the new glass.

About 2/3 of a stop difference. It will make a difference on how much light reaches the sensor.

That is the original straight off the card. It was taken on a T3i about 25ft away.
