Call East Coast Gear Supply in North Carolina. Chase there is one of the best Toyota differential men in the whole country, so good I am thinking of driving all the way from Arizona to North Caroling to get my gears swapped properly. Changing ring and pinion gear is something that has to be done properly or you will be much worse off than when you started! But I have no idea id there are lower ratio gears available....

Not that it matters but you'll see a big change in mpg just dropping from over 70mph to under 70mph. You don't need to go 55 to see a gain. 65 is a good speed for mpg without being a rolling road block. Of course, around here, traffic flow on the fastest roads is about 75. But, there's always room in the slow lane for slow folks.

Think about the cost of a gear swap and how long it will take to buy that back in gas. Going 75 instead of 80 will probably do more good for your wallet than swapping gears.

^ You do have a very good point

But the goal here is not to drive slower. that is not what anyone here is trying to do.

We are trying to lower our RPM's in 6th gear, or really all gears. In other words achieve the possibility of a higher top speed. so saying to "drive slower" is once again not the F@cking answer!

Yeah, even if you knew you could pick up 3 mpg for sure (which you don't know), and if gas was $3.40/gallon and you got 17 mpg currently (current cost per mile would be 20 cents and expected cost per mile would be 17 cents) making the change would save 3 cents/mile.

If it cost $1500 to make the swap it would take 50,000 miles to break even.

Going from 285/70s to 315/70s, my best avg mpgs went from 14.75 to 16.8.

Also I see better milege averaging 75-80 mph that I did at 65. I got less when using cruise control.

My guess is the final drive ratio and rpms put the engine at a more efficient range at 75 but who knows.

^ going to a wider tire saved fuel ??? or was the new tire a completely different style that weighed less than the old tire ?

I think the diameter helped in the gear ratio.

talked to several toyota dealers, and 3 local offroad shops (all worthless)

Thanks, Chase was very knowledgable! He basically said dont bother with the front diff, there is nothing he knows of that is a direct match up. http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/

for you 2wd trucks, you do have a few options on the rear if you have the LSD!

Chase told me to look into a company called "gear vendors" or something like that, they add some sort of over drive box before the driveshaft...

here I go back on the wild goose chasse

    edit: here it is- http://www.gearvendors.com/

LSD or no LSD we have all sorts of options as long as we dont have the e-locker third. I swapped an OEM LSD into my 5lug from a 6lug. Bolted my stock ring gear up and used the existing shims

Negatory. I got larger wheels and tires and decreased the overall weight from the stock set of steel and thick tires to lightweight Konigs and P rated tires and now have a tire that is about 3.5" taller than stock, have lower rpms on the highway, lighter unsprung weight and get significantly better gas mileage. If you can get a taller tire AND reduce weight you're good :)

Grimmjeeper has a gear ratio calculator online.http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

If you know your tranny gear ratios, transfer case ratios, and tire size, you can calculate the effect on rpm of changing the diff ratio.

But like someone above said, it will take a long time to get to break-even for the investment, unless you do it all yourself. Also, at resale, a truck with taller gearing may be harder to resell. It would be cheaper to put on taller tires to get the same effect.

I read a post here about a "super low" box like that. I don't remember the name of the vendor. Maybe they make a taller box as well. You wouldn't have to mess with the diffs at all if they do.

Here's some info on crawl boxes. If they can make them low they can probably make them high.

Don't bother to change the front diff gearing if you change the rear gearing?
