Hey, so I know its a bad thing to get water into the engine, but I am curious as to how bad it can get. First off, I will tell you what I did, regretfully.

I was out with a friend at an off road park and there was a trench full of brown water. We stopped got out and surveyed the situation, used a stick to gauge the depth of the water and what not, tried to take the proper steps to make sure everything would be OK. However, I was kinda wrong. lol

Anyway, I went through it and made it with no problem, however when I came out, there was a lot of steam coming from the hood and exhaust and it felt/sounded a little sluggish. Popped the hood open and the engine compartment was wet, checked the air intake and found that is was pretty soaked, after I turned it off of course and yes the engine kept running and continues to run even today.

Since then I have changed the oil/oil filter, changed the spark plugs and cleaned my air filter(AFE PRO DRY) and everything looked normal, except for the secondary filter(pic provided). After doing so the truck does seem to make a slightly different noise as well, but still starts normally and runs, not sure if the noise is related, (but asked that question on a different post).

I was thinking of replacing the secondary, and was also curious what else I can do to check and make sure I haven't royal screwed my Tacoma up.

Thanks for you help, it will be much appreciated, also I know I am a dumb ass, so I don't need to be reminded.

If you changed the oil and it didn't come out milky brown, that is good. If you got some eletrical things wet, that isn't so good. Are any codes coming up to cause the check engine light to come on?

Doesn't sound like you got water mixed with the oil, very good thing. You may have gotten some in the cylinders though. That shouldn't be there if you have run it since you went through the water. Can't help on the eletrical issues though.

Actions like this only reinforce the already widely held perception that the collective IQ of men who live in Southern states is somewhere between mild to moderate mental retardation.

the steam coming from the engine was due to the fact that the engine was hot and your going into water. steam is fine. water in your intake is when you need to worry. but being that you drained the oil and it was normal youre fine. if you really want to make sure your cylinders are completely dry you can take your plugs out and try to fire it up to allow everything in the cylinders to be shot out. you can replace the secondary air filter but its doesnt look that bad. as far as getting the electronics wet, its not the end of the world but play in the water enough and your start shorting out somethings. (sensors, starter, alternator...) also water is going to shorten the life of all the bearing on all the engine accessories.

pretty much if your engine is still running i doubt you got any water in it.

If your oil looked good (not milky/brown) when you changed it, you should be fine.

I think you may be over reacting the cat for instance is wicked hot (lots of steam) not to mention the rest of the exhaust system you have got to get pretty deep in the water to get any water in the engine. Your filter looks normal. I would stat to worry if water was running in the bottom of the door or you went through a lot of water fast.

Thanks, for all the help, I knew most of the water was just steaming off obviously, it just seemed more than just having water on the outside, was coming out the exhaust.

I know there was a least a little water in through the intake because I had to dry out the intake and filter with some shop rags.

As for the electrics I haven't had any issues with that.

I really just wanted to know how to check things before they just fall apart, and that's in general.

Thanks again for those who actually just like to help.

Thanks, I don't think thats the noise, I have checked that because I have caught some pretty big rocks before on the skid plate.

And yeah the water was almost up to the head lights but I think that's cause I was pushing up a pretty big wave, I had some good momentum going.

    Thanks!

This is exactly what I've put all of my vehicles through at one time or another... Wheeling in New Hampshire is a mix of rocky ledges, mud, and the occasional water hole. You'll be fine, just be aware of water depth vs air intake height. And keep that momentum going!
