On board air opinions

I am looking for a OBA compressor that i can fit in the long bed cubby with some modification, I dont wanna mount a tank and just wanna use it to blow off gear and air up some quad tires on my 450 trx maybe fill a tire or two on a vehicle.

Does that mean i Need a certain psi one that will push air the whole time its working?

without an air tank you're gonna need something with 100% duty cycle for anything you listed

 

Also, I would suggest highly against putting a compressor inside the cubby. Compressors generate heat, and when enclosed in that small of an area they can heat up quickly, and fail prematurely.

 

Look on CL for a good viair, I found a 440P with a carrying case for $150 IIRC that was practically brand new.

 

thanks everyone. I think the cubby with the door open and the lid off into the fender should be open enough. A hot engine bay under the hood surrounded by metal sounds worse. I do get the heat thing though. How much was the super flow?

 

Viair with a continuous duty rating; get one that's rated for at least whatever size tire you have on your truck.

 

If you plan on running without a tank, you'll have to find a compressor with a built in pressure switch or run a small manifold with a pressure switch in it.

As far as heat concerns, with most/all compressors you have to cut a hole for the heat sink regardless in the top of the cubby so it should have plenty of room to breath.

what else do i need? can i wire a relay and switch to give it power? a pressure gauge also>?

 

I have that same compressor and have it in my bed cubby. Works just fine, just takes a while. But I've aired it up and right after aired up my uncle's truck and it never over heated. I use it to air up my tires and ARB rear locker. I have a pressure switch and air gauge in the a-pilar. Then I have couplers extended to the front and rear bumper to help reach my tires. Pics of all of it in my build

 

So the pressure switch is just for a tank right? I wanna not have a tank, i wont need much air and would rather the compressor just do the short work of filling a atv tire or dusting off something. So cant i just run power to it and then use it as if i hooked it to the battery.

 

How are you gonna get any pressure to blow something off w/o a tank to hold pressure?

 

i thought you could get enough pressure from the motor itself with out a tank>? maybe im miss understanding 100% duty cycle at 150 psi?

 

You use a pressure switch regardless, you don't need a tank. It just tells the compressor when to kill power.

 

wouldnt the switch on the compressor kill the power? like the on off?

 

You still need the pressure switch for when the air valve is closed, so the air line doesn't over pressurize.

You dont really need a tank to air up tires, but if you're looking to "blow off gear" like you were saying, you'll need a tank to build pressure

 

would a 1 gal tank work well enough for that? how much does it actually hold>
