I've got the "Christmas Present" CS5 that Adobe released to the public last year.
I didn't have the PC power to run it at the time, but I do now... I just need to get off my butt and install it.
I just haven't had the need for it yet. Paint.net and Gimp have done everything I've had a need for... color balance/mods/effects, pincushion, cropping, resizing, etc....

The first thing I noticed back in the 80s when I went from rangefinder to SLR was that you really have to be able to read the passing speed, or shoot with both eyes open and align the subject with something on the camera body.

But I was able to get some awesome panning shots at airshows.

I've learned to shoot with both eyes doing my sporting coverage.

I did find it easier when the cars were going faster

I'm new to all this photography terminology. Is this considered panning?

Panning is following a fast moving subject while using a slow shutter speed such as 1/40

    Perfect example.

If you had held the camera steady, the Citation would have been blurred and the ground and trees would have been sharp.

That was still a pretty quick exposure, like Fearnothing said, a longer exposure enhances the effect, like the race car shot above, but it also makes it harder to keep the subject in position in the frame (and thus, hold a stable image while blurring the background).

Cool, thanks for the info guys. That one was taken at 1/200. I'll have to give a slower exposure a try. I get a jet in about once or twice a month, so I'll have to practice on the piston aircraft until I catch the next one.

My photo was shot at 1/40, I did have a monopod to help stabilize my camera

I'm just trying to come up with an idea for the weekly contest.
1 second exposure, and I really want something that is not the cliche "neon taillights on the highway"

L glass is the top quality Canon glass you can buy. Its freaking expensive as shit and the shots with them are fucking gorgeous.

    Canon.

    Good.

    I can't use it :D

Now on the topic of filters... I would assume that the Nikon and Canon branded filters are actually low-end Hoya and "acceptable" but nothing special?

I need to start working some quality into my filter collection. Especially now that I've got decent lenses in 52, 62, and 86... I don't want to end up "investing" twice what I should be spending.

Not a huge filter fan myself. What you need is probably a circular polarizer and some neutral density filters. Maybe a 3 and a 10 stop. A square filter and holder is a great way to use gradient ND or creative filters. I like the Lee System for the square filters.

In both cases, round or the Lee system, you can use step rings to use a large filter on a smaller diameter lens.

Buy the very best filters you can. Especially for ND and Circ P-for the circular, you may want to consider a slim filter to avoid vignetting.
