My old boss before he left his old company to go out on his own had a 2006 Tacoma double cab short as a company work truck/personal vehicle. Before he gave it back it had over 250,000 miles and the only things done were routine maintenance and shocks all around. He would haul epoxy flooring material and tools in the bed, haul trailers, and take the truck to go hunting in.

Another thing to consider is that the v6 trucks with automatic transmissions come with a transmission that is meant to handle the 4.7L v8 that they use to put in the 4Runners, so the tranny should really have no issues.

My dad has a 2005 double cab long bed TRD Sport v6 automatic with 113k miles and only has had to do routine maintenance. He still averages 19-20 mpg mixed highway and city. I have a 2006 regular cab 4 cylinder 5 speed and barely get over that with my lift and 33's. To answer your question on the torque and horsepower upgrade there is TRD and URD superchargers, headers, intakes, y-pipes. If you want to check out performance parts look at LCEngineering or urdusa.com

OP you talk about "why should I care about resale if I'm not going to sell it", the reason you should care is there is a reason that people want these trucks and the resale values are so high. Toyota does and always has had a reputation for reliability. I had a Ranger for 3 years before my Tacoma and I fixed that damn thing every 3 weeks. Something was always going bad on it. I've not read good things about Chevy trucks made after '75 and have had bad experiences with them myself. If you check consumer reports, the Nissan has been declining in reliability recently as well. Toyota cannot be touched on reliability; if you treat your truck right it will last you forever. Everybody I know that has a Tacoma loves it and raves about the reliability. Don't get me wrong, the Frontier I'm sure is an okay truck, but are you really gonna lose sleep over a 30 horsepower difference? The Frontier weighs more so that extra horsepower is likely not going to be felt. To me, the Toyota is a no-brainer. I love my truck and I've not had to fix a single thing on it since I've bought it. Read reviews online and see what people say about these trucks. I would not even consider the Chevy colorado if I were you because to me they are hideous and I don't hear good things about the 5 cylinder engines in em. Plus its a chevy so there is no reliability to be had.

Welcome. I don't know if it's really worth $850 for the amount of times you would actually change them though.

Umm becuase I want brand new, I don't want someone else's problems and I can afford a new truck... I work 70 hours a week minimum, I want to buy what I want. I have 3 vehicles, my wife will likely keep my Jeep now, I'll buy an older one and redo it as a project, but I need something with a bed when I get wood and other simple stuff. I do a lot of projects and putting the boat in and taking it out every year I need something more than my neighbors tractor which I've been using.

and see thats another thing man, these trucks have been here for a while now and pretty much anything you want to change or swap there is a solution out there somewhere! for instance you wanted rear break rotors....BAM there it is! and that is the reason people have these trucks, simply amazing vehicles!

OP- If you love love love love your jeep, keep it and go to a used car lot and buy a pickup for $3000.

Enough people have answered your initial question.

Fair enough, I have something partial to Nissan becuase of the old King Cab I had that couldn't die. Have they gone done in reliability that much in 20 years? I honestly am asking. The Tacoma is badass, don't think I'm knocking it, I wouldn't consider buying one if I weren't serious. My issue is how muc of the Toyota craze is marketing compared to real value. I want to hear what actual owner's view are.

And this is the exact reason I came here. I'd rather talk to the gear heads who own the truck and work on them then the guy who makes money for me walking in and handing him a check. Thank you.

I do love the Jeep, I wasn't trying to bash the Tacoma at all, just saying it isn't build the same for the reasons as a Jeep. I'll always own a Jeep; I just want a truck too. Tacomas seem like great trucks so I wanted to know more about them.
