Yes I can agree, I didn't crash. But at the same time if there's somewhere you have to go, such as work, I don't know if you have much of a choice.

And honestly, if I'm driving over 20 or 30 I'm in 4x4 unless I'm playing around. I don't take chances haha

You don't need 4wd unless there's 5+ inches of snow on the road IMO. Even then it's iffy. 4wd only helps you take off, it does NOT help when slowing down or on ice at all.

People seem to think that even though you have 4wd, you're invincible on snow and ice.

It depends on if there is snow on the highway lol. While driving 4wd keeps the back end from walking out on you on. I drive on the highway when it's covered in snow at 55 regularly.!

yeah but if you hit small patches of ice on the highway having 4wd engaged will allow the front end to keep tracking where the wheels are pointed. thats how ive always thought of it

Yes it helps, but it's not necessary. I guess since you're a noob to driving on the snow it wouldn't be a bad idea for you.

You'll get the hang of correcting your truck when the ass end kicks out.

Really just depends on the road conditions. If there's a decent buildup of snow or slush go with 4x4 and keep it under 45.

No-one said they were invincible but 4x4 works wonders in snow and you don't just need it taking off. If you're open in the rear and going up a hill you're going to break traction and lose momentum in 2wd. The biggest thing that will help people in the snow is experience. You have to know what to look for, where on the road to drive, and when to let out of the throttle.

Yeah, 4x4 helps in many more situations that just taking off in the snow...

I'm coming from driving a 2wd for the past 4 years in the winter, so I guess take it for what it's worth. I see too many soccer moms in their 4wd SUVs flying past me on ice covered highways doing 65+.

If you hit ice you're just fucked. You really can't steer on ice 4x4 or not. If I can't avoid I try not to turn the wheel or touch the gas

People like that is why I avoid populated areas when it snows. I stayed with my parents last night and drove on bad backroads to work this morning just to avoid the highway

imo that's a stupid ass rule. If there is snow on the ground, over a couple inches that's enough to make it slippery or icy so you migh as well use 4wd. It does you no good sitting there not engaged, it does not hinder your driving ability wen engaged, so you might as well use it.

And 4wd along with helping you get goin 4wd helps you turn, keep the truck tracking straight, and if you use engine braking 4wd puts braking ability on the back and front wheels

ya. Anything over a couple inches you might as well. It's dumb now not to. You don't get a prize for driving and not using it. A rwd truck is the worst thing to drive in the snow, if you do have 4wd why put yourself in that position

NO NO NO.....Put some weight in between those rear wheel wells and "Drive smart"....You put that in 4x4 at highway speeds and it will make you a "YouTube" star in a country minute...

ICE is a whole different "Devil" and can make the BEST have "oh $hit" moments.....Plowed all night with the loader and jumped in the Tacoma to go home, came off the sno-packed pit road onto black pavement, shifted out of 4x4 to 2 wheel and proceeded to spin around twice...my "Black pavement was black ice  " temps drop and snow gets "crunchy" while water becomes ICE.....even with all of my ballast sitting out back...;)

Like I said, take it for what it's worth. You don't NEED to use it, but YES it does help. If it didn't, nobody would ever use it.

Odds are he wont be reaching "highway speeds" in the snow especially his first time driving on it. That said I still don't go over like 55 in 4x4

So you're telling him not to use 4x4 on the highway? If so then that is a terrible suggestion.
