Last summer I got a 5LB Extinguisher. I hope that I never have to use it but it's there just in case I or someone else needs it. I just hope that if you have one that you know how to use it properly. Having First Aid isn't a bad idea either.

Halon displaces O2 in enclosed spaces and the people die anyway.

I am also amazed that people don't carry a pocket knife to cut seat belts with it they won't move. Fire extinguisher to put out the fire plus a pocket knife so you cut a belt and get someone out of a car.

Good Post OP...and good on you and the other folks for helping a
    person out.

Halon 1301 is ok for enclosed spaces and humans.
It was designed for occupied computer rooms/data centers etc...
because it does not leave much residue and is safe for electronics.

Standard water sprinklers are not going to work so well around electronics.
The other Halon types and CO2 are not recommended
as they are not human friendly in enclosed spaces.

In most outdoor/automotive applications a standard ABC type Dry Chemical extinguisher works best.
It does leave a mess when activated, but it's basically baking soda,
so other than some mild eye/throat irritation
the MSDS on it is quite tame and can be rinsed away with water.

A 5 lb extinguisher will put out smaller fires, but a 10 lb or larger is better
for most types of fires...Automotive fires can be hard to put out
especially if rubber or other materials/fluids have ignited.

A company called Amerex, in Trussville Alabama makes the best ABC type extinguishers.
The Kidde types are not that great imo.
I've worked for both companies before i started my own and Kidde
has had many issues with bad gauges, plastic parts and poor quality over the years.

Also, the primary reason fire extinguishers/automatic systems are not available in Automobiles
is that the Auto Manufacturers do not want consumers to think that their car(s) will catch fire.

One question Ive never really found an answer for. What would happen if you use a BC dry chemical fire extinguisher on a typical class A fire. Typically any oil or gas (B) would also light up a class A material around it. My boat came with a BC extinguisher, which I transferred into my truck when I got rid of the boat. Should I replace it with an ABC?

That's why we don't use them on our helos for fighting cockpit and cabin fires. We switch to more of a PKP style of extinguisher

it's just the cold fire chemical compressed. good to fight a car fire before it gets too big.

How does it compare to regular ABC extinguishers?

My brothers amp behind the passenger seat caught fire in a drive thru last year. He didn't have a fire extinguisher in the truck. Luckily he got it put out before anything was burnt. The amp was destroyed. Audison said there was nothing they could do about it, since it's a rare problem. The only damage in the truck was the wood and the vinyl wrap was messed up, oh and the tint on the back window was melted a little. We got him a set of extinguishers for his birthday a few weeks later though. So he keeps one under his seat now, just in case.. I don't have the pictures of the amp destroyed, but heres a before picture.

Someone needs to come up with a clean 2nd gen fire extinguisher mount. Wonder where? I have one under my back seat. It's not as accessible on long trips die to my stuff being back there. I want it easy to get at. Maybe something in the box, since I'll have a softopper eventually. But I would prefer a clean discrete cab mount. For a 5lb

I know I'm not a 2nd gen, but I've kept this in my truck for the past 5 months. Hope I never need it....

What about a mount that goes behind the console. The only thing is that since that it's not flat up and down I am only thinking that you're only going to be able to have a mount that holds the top in. Unless you can make it extend out from the bottom so the holder will grab the extinguisher.
