im on the look for a few mosin nagants. i cant really find any local, and i have found a few online at larger stores. but i have read you can get pieces of crap easily from there. any advice with buying online? or would you say stick to in person only so you can see the quality of the gun?

Go buy one locally that's all I have to say. Its a gun that was built extremely well and I swear they are indestructible.

I'd say that the best way would be to go somewhere that you can inspect what you are buying - a local gun show, a Big 5, Cabella's, etc. Next, someplace like Gunbroker.com where you can see pictures and ask questions about the specific rifle you want - of course, unless you have your own FFL (01 or 03), you'll have to have it shipped to an 01FFL.

Finally, you could go through one of the on-line sellers like Classic or AIM but will also have to use a local FFL unless you have your own.

This is true... They are definately awesome guns

The problem is... ... almost all that you are going to find have literally a million or more rounds put through them
Your first shot will be a bullseye... the second one might be close... then you'll be lucky to hit within 10 yards of the paper, once the barrel gets warm

I'll have to disagree with you on this one. While there are some out there with shot out barrels, there are many with decent to excellent ones. That's why being able to hand-select the rifle is important - unless you really are just looking for a shooter.

This is my final 100 yd zero target for my '42 Izhevsk ex-sniper that I restored prior to a Vintage Sniper match. Started lower left - 2 strings of 5 rounds; then to lower right - same thing. Then, after final adjustments moved to upper red bull. The 3 "outlier" rounds were lesser powdered rounds that were mixed in randomly with the match rounds - even they are pretty consistent.

I get the same results with my other 3 snipers and even my standard Infantry Mosins are good shooters.

I have an M44 and love it! Look at the barrel and breach area, the bolt for smooth operation, firing pin adjustment, and general fit of everything. Sticky bolts are common and usually easy to fix. Firing pin adjustment should be checked. Mine is pretty accurate, especially considering it's a carbine. My brother has one too that is accurate. Both are good shooters, mine required a little bolt massaging and a day of cosmoline removal. Put it out in the hot sun and keep wiping it off till it stops bleeding.

Check Craigslist for one. Even tho it's against their rules many people list guns & ammo there. The ads don't last long before they're flagged off so check frequently. The upside is that since the ads get deleted you may find a motivated seller. Many people ask ridiculous prices, some are realistic, once in a while super cheap. I paid $300 and got about 1000 rnds. and a Mauser in the deal.

Focus on clean barrel, decent bluing and a smooth action. I wouldn't worry too much about the exterior wood. You can refinish the wood to make it beautiful again. My rifle is very accurate. I had to raise the front sight post a little cause it had a tendency to shoot a little high - which is common for Mosin's.

That really depends on the individual and the firearm. The us made new/rem's are top quality work. Same with the finns.

You'll pay a premium for Finn Mosins and Polish M44s. If you truly want a shooter, look for a Finn M39. If you are just looking for a great shooting rifle at a great price - go for a Mosin M91/30.

    Here are some of mine:

And for a touch of something different, some different carbines - Soviet M44, British No1 Mk5 and 3 US M1 Carbines (Inland, National Postal Meter and Rock-ola).

Just a bunch of old crap
J&G gun shop up in Prescott is where one of our members here has gotten a few from. I think Specalt has 4 or 5 Mosin's from there. They get a few in all the time and their prices are fantastic if you don't mind the drive to Prescott. There used to be a J&G down here in Tempe, but I didn't Google to see if they were still there.
