I have a 08 double cab long bed...I am wonder how y'all haul your long kayaks around (I have a ride 135..it's 13'6")...I have a yakima outdoorsman 300 from my previous truck and was thinking of drilling a hole in the bed rail system as I have seen done on here but would like to get y'alls opinion on the matter...thanks for your time and consideration

I bought a flat baja rack to transport my 12' paddleboard. I had the bag manufacturer make pads for me so it doesn't get dinged up.

Thanks for the idea...I was thinking more along the lines of a bed rack of some sort...I don't have a roof rack on it now as it did not come with one from factory...I kinda want to stay away from messing with the cab if possible...any one else?

I bought a trailer and put racks on the top of it. I always end up taking camping stuff and fishing stuff with me. I have a toolbox in the bed and a short bed to boot. So not a lot of room.
I also use the trailer to haul a lot of other stuff.

I have a 12' kayak and just put it in the bed with the tailgate down. Strap across the top and strap the front handle on the yak to where the chain would hook to the tow package.

I have a double cab and had a factory roof rack installed just for this purpose. In addition, I use the Yakima SoulPad on the crossbars of the factory rack. These pad are very dense so you can tension down quite a bit. I've carried a 14 foot Ocean Kayak that weighs 45 pounds. Fortunately I only have to travel a couple miles. But additional tie downs on the fore and aft of the boat would make this system freeway worthy.

I think the factory rack investment is worth it. The design is nice, and when not in use, the stow away crossbars reduces the wind noise considerably.

I had to do this once... BAD idea. one 11ft kayak and 2 13 ft kayaks. All were Hobies so about $6K worth of kayaks in the back.

Yes, except the trailer hitch in the back for me... they must be good and tight knots. The triangle formed by both tow hooks keeps it from wanting to move side to side much.

I drove 9 hrs on the highway with my 14.5' yak like this and it didn't budge. I use a trucker's hitch to cinch it down.

In my last Yota I built a rack to go in the bed out of 2x4's. Worked real slick. Like a contractor rack that instead of sitting on the bed rails, it sat inside the bed.

Search Tracrac on here or go to the official kayak thread.

I never trust roof racks on a Tacoma for long stuff.

I use the OEM roof rack with foam blocks attached to the cross members with velcro straps. THen strap it all down to the anchor points on the rack rails. For short, local trips that's all I need. For more stability on the freeway I shift it back and add an additional support I built from 2x2s in the bed (pictured). It also doubles as a loading ramp to get it on the roof by myself (its a bit heavy). my yak is 17 feet. More pics on my profile page

I think I've built the same design, CLC boats? chesapeake 17? Looks great! Good idea with the bed support.
