I tried to describe to my 19 year old the other day what it was like to have all of three channels on TV, and one only came in well enough to watch if it was cloudy and windy, and they ALL turned OFF at 2am.

The look on her face was amazing.

Funny how this thread 'Things the next generation DOES NOT NEED to know' turned into 'Things the next generation WILL NOT know'

Of the responses I read ( about half ) none responded correctly to the thread.

They won't have to know there were 9 planets in our solar system. Remember, Pluto doesn't count anymore. So sad...

Ah yes, the old Quadra-bog..haha. Had a few of those in my younger years like my 84 Camaro and 84 Monte Carlo.

I had to stick another tape in my Pioneer SuperTuner tape deck so it would hold the tape carriage down.

    Do those not exist anymore?

Shame..my first job at 9 yrs old. My dad wouldn't let me get a 6 day route and said I could do a once a week. I called the local paper that published on Thurs and asked if they had routes. They said no. I asked if I could start one. Ran my ass ragged trying to get subscribers. Made $2-$3 a week on that..then a year later my dad said I could get a daily. That was $12 a week and I kept the weekly one as well till I was 12 and started mowing lawns and doing yard work.

One thing to be said for independent artists, they still have that sound. Granted it's 30 yrs old anyways, but listen to this and tell me you can't hear that it's shoestring..among other things, the spoken part in the middle you can easily hear the echo.

    http://youtu.be/mV9evbrrUcU

The one speaker reminds me of my 77 Chevy Malibu I inherited from my grandfather, the original owner, in 1994.

Straight 6, one barrel carb, room enough to put a second engine in the bay just about. Had an AM radio that weighed a ton when I removed it..and one speaker in the middle of the dash. That car also had no rear defroster. I had a plug-in one that went in the cigarette lighter. The cord ran to the back of the car and you stuck the unit to the roof with double sided tape.

What's it like to be able to order stuff off of infomercials, cause their parents have to be 21 and older and aren't quite there yet.

Yep. When the computer crashed they took it apart and found a moth that was fried in between two vacuum tubes. Thus the term "computer bug" for when a computer shut down for no apparent reason.

LIES!!! :( Pluto will always be a planet to me...

Routes still exist, they are just very different.
I run a route for the Virginian Pilot with my dad, but we run it out of a car/van for the most part. In the summer, (when the van isn't dead) we run it on bikes- we'll park the van at the beginning of a section and run it on bikes, going back to the van to replenish our papers. It typically runs anywhere from 1:30 in the morning to 7, depending on the day of the week. Mondays are short- we may be doing papers from 3 to 6 or so. But on Sundays, we leave home at 1:30, finish bagging papers at the plant by 4, and we willbe done with the route itself usually by 6:30-7. We get ten cents per paper Mon-Sat, 12 cents per paper on Sunday, and 10 cents per OTP. (Out-of-town publication- ie: Richmond Times Dispatch, Daily Press (Newport News) Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and New York Times.) Since we have ~175 papers on a Monday (the lightest day of the week) and 275 on Sunday, (the heaviest) it averages between 18 and 33 dollars per day. We also run single copy papers- as in, taking bundles of papers to local businesses. We have a Farm Fresh, a Starbucks, and a box at Shoney's that we deliver singles to.
