If weight's an issue then yeah that'd be a plus for sure.

I have a rebel. While it feels like a toy, I use it well lol.

Save yourself neck pains and get a black rapid shoulder strap or something long enough to use as one. Neck straps are garbage.

 

I love my rebel for backpacking. Even when I upgrade, I will keep the rebel for pack trips.

 

^^^This. Much nicer carrying it on your shoulder with big glass.

 

Canon has a 60d refurb for 575. Might jump on that

 

If you are carrying 'big' glass, you should be concerned about the weight of the lens on the mount and you should not be carrying the two by the camera strap. Instead, you should be carrying it by the lens's carrying strap.

 

just got back from my crossfit gyms open house. i used the 50mm almost all night and think i got some great shots. Can't wait to go through them. Was fun to have to move around a lot more though.

 

I've been just holding it by the lens when I have my 400 on. I don't have a strap for the lens (it didn't come with one either ) so I just have the camera strap on in case I need to use both hands for something.

 

Which one do you have? 2.8 of 4.5?

My mistake. You have the "light weight" version. If you were hanging that off the camera mount, probably OK.

Maybe a better way to decide is whether the lens is too heavy is to look for the strap mounts on the lens.

 

Yeah it's still heavy enough that I feel bad by hanging the lens off the mount without support. Doesn't have any strap mounts on the lens, though, that's for sure. I've checked.

 

It's been a while since I've seen one but they're not all that heavy. Great lens for the money too.

 

It actually balances and carries quite well. I use a Black Rapid strap attached to the lens. I would not hesitate to use this setup for the 80-400 or 200-400 either.

Here, you're carrying by the lens foot. Perfectly fine.

 

If the lens has a foot on it, it's there for a reason and you should always use it.

Btw if anyone is interested in a black rapid strap for $48 let me know and I'll give you the link to a few I found.

 

Didn't have any leftovers from challenge but I did take a HDR of the Navy dive helmet.
