I have no desire to lift my truck because I don't plan to do much off roading, although I will do some. Additionally, my wife is a 5 foot tall Filipina who learned how to drive when she was 26. If I lift my tuck I'll need to buy her a ladder and up my insurance.

My other thoughts on the matter have to do with functionality. I bought my truck because I like the look of the Tacoma, I want to be able to haul things (my kid is borrowing it already to move into a bigger place), and I want to tow stuff... like boats and campers.

When you lift or slam a truck it takes away from its functionality. Just wanted to know why people do it... and some of the responses have helped me understand.

I'd say that something like 90% of tacomas I see on the road are on stock suspension, so I definitely think the OP is in the majority.

I spent real money on a suspension system that gives me about 3" of lift because i frequently drive over big rocks and a lot of snow and have slightly larger tires (265/75), and because I think a modest lift is pretty... sort of the way I like a kind of large butt. Too much of a good thing...;)

What does "slamming" a truck mean?

When I replaced my rear leaf springs I actually made the truck function better with a load in the bed and towing. The rear of my truck isn't about to touch the bump stops and sits level with a full bed and boat on the back. That was one of my reasons for lifting. The stock springs wouldn't support crap.

I really hated the way the truck rode when stock. It felt like I was driving a
Cadillac, very spongy. I was used to driving 4x4's and was disappointed Toyota decided to drop their standard down to the people buying a truck that had always drove cars and wanted that ride.

I started out with a '79 cj7, then a '83 Toyota pickup 4wd, '97 Mustang  (wtf?), '00 Taco 4wd, and now an '11 Taco 4x4. I know how a 4x4 should handle and feel. My '11 didn't feel like that and needed a little help to be all it could be.

I got the lift and do off road some. It is not rare to see me take off down somewhere to see where it goes. I guess it comes down to if I want to go there I want to have the extra clearance to get there if I need it.

Eh, I wouldn't mind having a lowered 5-lug single cab 2nd gen. I can enjoy both sides of the spectrum if it's done right.

In response to #71 - Thank you, Murph. A well thought, lucid response which I am more intelligent from having read.

THIS is what I was looking for when I asked the question!

I lifted and increased my tire size so that I could go exploring in the mountains all around me. Purpose built. I go out every few weeks. I go places that I couldn't go stock.

Lifted, my truck feels as comfortable and drives exactly like it did stock. I did not lose functionality - if anything, I increased functionality. My truck now can haul & tow heavier loads than a stock truck; due to the upgraded rear leaf springs. And haul stuff I do.

I have to admit that I absolutely love how my truck looks. But this doesn't mean that I dislike how stockers look. If you're not going off-road, then a proper suspension lift might be a waste of money; unless you are just going for the look - nothing wrong with that either.

Even w/out lift and mods, I`ll bet your stock Tacoma would go places you would not dream of taking it.
