people come to this site for answers to their questions,me included...i did autocross for years(77 celica,82 scirroco,83 mustang gt)all of these cars were daily drivers, but it didn't bother me to change sway bars, springs, shocks, tires, sport tune, to have a car that was a bit more up to the task, you posted and i replied, maybe you sensed a bit of sarcasim, sorry dude,i'm 63 yrs old...we get like that...my major hobby is training dogs(schutzhund and personal protection)i've been to training sites where a car or mini van couldn't go and you'd be cleaning mud and ruts from the undercarriage for days on a stock height truck...most trucks on this site are modified in some way,to suit a personal taste...it's not why,it's why not.

This is not untrue. Tacomas are a great truck and very capable.

But most of the places I go would greatly increase the risk of damage to my truck if it were at stock elevation. I could still get to most of those places; but I would tear up the underside of my truck - traversing fallen trees, rocks, washed-out logging roads.

This thread is evidence of why we all chose the best truck in its class. It has the ability to meet all of our needs - whatever they may be.

    best wheel bearings around! www.marionbumper2bumper.com
I see my wheel bearings are doing their job well! (sorry, I just HAD to get a plug in there)

OK, why did I lift my Tacoma?

I have been an off-road driver, passenger, and spotter, for some 25 years now. I like all types of terrain from rocks to mud, to sand. It doesn't make a whole lot of difference to me. For me it is about the challenge: Pushing my skill, and my truck, as far as I can take it. So I had my Tacoma, and wheeled with it for close to 2 years before I touched it. I enjoyed going out with other groups and having fun.

Eventually though I started reaching the limits of my truck. Traction was needed to take the more difficult trails. To do this requires better, larger tires. This is not only for traction, but for ground clearance. You can't climb a rock or a hill if the frame, front crossbeam, or rear differential hit the ground or rocks before the tires can grip.

So how do I increase clearance? Well, the ONLY way to get the differential to have more clearance is: Larger tires. So I find the tires, but they won't fit. Why? Because the stock suspension won't let them fit, or turn and function. So a suspension lift is required to do this.

THAT is why I lifted my truck. Because I use it to play. Some people put 250HP boat motors on a 19 foot long bass boat. I can still get to the same places with a 50HP motor. But hey, they fish for sport and competition. Guess what? I wheel for sport, and used to for competition. It is what I enjoy doing.

As for those who think us with lifted trucks don't use them for what they are built for, I use my truck PLENTY to hall tools and equipment. I have also hauled gravel for the driveway, hay for my sister, pulled boats and trailers....well, you get the point. I still use my truck as a truck. It just happens to be taller.

Again, thanks. A response that teaches me things I did not know.

I'm not going to slam my truck. There isn't a slammed truck on planet earth that appeals to me. I may lift it up, after reading some of the responses here. I want a boat. I want a camper. What I've read here makes me believe that a lift may help me tow those things.

Bamatoy - Thank you. Another reply that makes me understand.

I'm new to 4x4's and off-road. Perhaps after a year or two I will have that "come to Jesus" moment. In the mean time... I ask stoopid questions and people with more experience than me make me smarter. Thanks.

You don't have to lift it to make its payload capability better. There are various strategies that one can take.
