New gears for 34" tires?

I am going to get some new tires real soon and was looking at the Toyo open country M/T in 285/75/17. It is 34 inches tall and a 1/2 inch wider than what I have now. My performance shops are telling me that I would get way more hp and torque with these tires from regearing than from adding DTLT headers, DT exhaust and TRD CAI. Is this true? And if so, what are the best gears to run 34's?

 

you wont get more power from re gearing you get more usable power im running 33's and i have no noticable power loss i am sure 34's or 35's you would start to notice some power loss

Gears will give you better usable power. 4.56 is what will probably work the best.

There are a few places that sell complete 3rd members with the gears installed. So it can be a simple R&R.

For the long term it will be better than headers and CAI.

 

We just added 4.56s to my bro's truck front and rear and it feels way better! He's rocking 33" tires the truck fucken pulls like it did the first day off the lot!! All the power is back...and it crawls really nice off-road!

 

Do you know of a place that sells the whole setup? And what about my locking rear diff, will it still work? I only wanted a 34" tire but it is getting hard to find some in that size. I found a 315/70/17 in a BFG AT but it is really 34.5 inches tall, might as well get a 35X12.50 that is really 34.8 inches tall.

Would this be the whole setup I need to regear to 4.56? I see they either send you a new differential or charge you $400 when you send them your old one back. Is that right? And thanks for the info, but I know shit about regearing. Another path I must travel.

 

Bravo to you for giving the 34" tires a try. I've asked and asked on here but nobody seems to have tried it. Let me know what you end up trimming. You have yours lifted up 3.5" right?

 

Yeah, one of the companies charges a core charge. But the other I believe just sell the complete third members. I'm not sure which one? You would have to call them.

I am 4 inches now and rub with 33's while offroading. I will be 5 inches tommorow morning.

 

How bad do you rub offroad? If your rubbin 33s at 4" i guess i better not try to go with 34s on a 3.5".... unless i was a mall crawler. Which heaven knows im not lol. Good luck with it! let us know how it turns out!

 

ECGS has a core charge. When you ship them back your old third, they will refund your core charge.

This would be the cheapest route because they are nocking off some $$ due to the fact you are sending them your old third.

 

Amen, the gear swap is not as expensive as I have read on here. I thought it would cost a fortune, but it is one of the most bang for your buck mods you can do, if running 33"-35" tires. I should have got this before my DTLT headers and exhaust.

 

3.73 will be fine for 34's. Plus the truck is light. I have run 35's on my silverado with 3.73's and 37's on 4.10's. If i was you i wouldn't worry about regearing the truck for 34's or even 35's.

 

Really?? I would think you would get some more "usable" power & torque from regearing for 34"s and 35" tires than with stock gears. I have 33's now and have noticed no real power loss yet.

 

Your not going that much bigger on the tire. If you were going with 37 or bigger yeah you would definitely need to regear, but for 34's 3.73s with be just fine with no real notice
