I've read about 40-50 different threads on here and TTora about people doing this and I think I'm about to start gathering the parts to do so. I think it will be cheaper to do this, rather than selling mine and buying a 4wd b/c I can do all the work myself. Plus, I've come to love my Tacoma and have already so much invested in it (TG Bumper, Satoshi, Billies & Eibach's, etc.)

I'm beginning the search for parts and I'm wondering if the A340F transmission will work on my 2001 Single cab 2.7L Automatic. If not, what transmission will?

I know 4WD automatic comes with the A340F
I know the 3.4 V6 Manual comes with the R150F
I know the PreRunner V6 comes with A340E

Basically, I'm confused as to which transmission I need, b/c I know single cabs use a different one from double cabs, manuals use different ones from autos, and 2.4, 2.7, and 3.4 all use different ones.

    Please help.

Okay, so you need an A340F for your truck, but you have to make sure it came out of a 2.7 l 4 cyl truck.

The reason being is that the A340F is the same transmission that is in both the 3.4 l and the 2.7 l but the bell housings are different, you can switch them with your transmissions bell housing, and it would bolt right up. But the problem then is where the transfer case shifter comes through the floor, if you are using a tranny/case combo from a 3.4 l the shifter is right on top of the transfer case (called a top shift case), so the shifter does not come up through the stock hole in the floor of your truck its about 3-4" too far back. But when you use an A340F from a 2.7 l truck the shifter is on the aluminum adapter between the transmission and the transfer case (called a forward shift case) so it comes right up through the stock hole in your floor. I have one of both in my garage, ill take a picture when i get back from church.

This is the A340F from a 3.4 l, you can see where the shifter connects right to the top of the transfer case.

Awesome. Thanks, man! So, it'd be easier to just get a transmission/transfer case/shifter from a 4wd, rather than converting my transmission? Other than that, all the other parts can pretty much be from any 1st gen 4wd, right?

Yes, any year 95-01, dont get one from an 02 or newer they added some system to make them drive by wire or something, but it wont work for your truck.
But make sure it is a transmission from a 2.7 l 4 cyl!
Here is a picture of one, you can see the transfercase shifter is in the front square between the tranmission and transfer case.

can you just buy the correct transfer case from a 2.7 auto and bolt it up to you existing tranny?

No because the output shafts between the 2wd prerunner transmissions and the 4wd transmissions are different lengths.
