I was running "S" (shutter priority) to hold the 1" requirement, but it's done the same thing on full auto.

Focus distance wasn't the problem.. I've focused this kit lens (18-55) down close enough so the subject is shadowed by the lens when the flash goes off.

I just took this literally 6-fingers away from my keyboard....

    f5.6
    1/60
    55mm (35mm equivalent 82mm)
    ISO 220
Pop-up flash (you can see the shadow of the lens at the bottom of the image)

Don't forget that many lenses have two distance settings. One for fairly close and the other for distance. A lens might focus to say 9 inches but only if the focus selector is set for close range.

Couldn't decide between color or black and white for my challenge entry. I liked the warmth of the metal in color, but I thought the sunflower yellow on the wall was distracting, and that isn't as noticeable in the black and white. Thoughts? I ended up going with the color because it felt to me like there was more depth (maybe?) to it. :notsure:

I like the more industrial look of the B&W. Not sure there's a difference in depth between the color and black and white. There's also that bright light behind the cog set.
I like the motion implied by the spinning wheel too.

The derailleur being upside down is more distracting than the sunflower (could you clone that out in the color?) though.

In LR there's an option that you can just click that automagically puts it in black and white. I'm pretty new to working with B&W, but now that I look at it again, I agree, it could use more contrast.

I definitely get the industrial vibe from the B&W, but maybe it's my attachment to the bike that's making me not like that part of it. Yeah, I just noticed the light behind, that's coming from outside my apartment. I think I just should've chosen a better background, but oh well. I needed to get it done quickly for the challenge.
Yeah I don't have a bike stand, otherwise I would've had it right-side up. I tried rotating a different picture with less background 180* to get it right side up, but the perspective was still obviously wrong, even though there was less background.
What do you mean by clone the sunflower out? I tried just reducing the yellow color saturation individually, but then that took most of the "warmth" out that I wanted, so that didn't work. I vaguely remember a video saying to use a touch-up brush, but I didn't feel like playing around with it right now.

Were you using live view or looking through the view finder?

The "?" is your warning symbol that something isn't right. It was probably trying to tell you that you needed the flash to take the picture. The camera doesn't know what you are doing so it's trying to get you a picture you can use. The longer exposure will make up for the lack of flash but the camera doesn't know that you know that, it only knows get a correctly exposed picture. There is a setting in my camera to unlock the shutter button to take the pic in focus or not and it may be holding the shutter for flash too on yours, idk (I've never used a d3100). Or it could have been the lack of contrast where it couldn't confirm focus or get focus perfect so it fails to take the pic also due to the setting in the menu to not take an OOF picture. The camera's use contrast to focus in live view. I'm guessing it uses phase-detect AF in regular mode (view finder) like mine.

I increased the contrast and the clarity a bit.
I tried using the spot removal tool to get rid of the sunflower but the spots/clones were obvious.

    Ok here I go again.
    60d body only for 575
    Or
    T4i with 18-135 STM lens got 685.

I know it's a kit lens but I've red a bunch of good stuff about it. Also I really want to eventually get better lens but I'm not sure what focal length I want to go with. I need to shoot more to figure out what I use the most.

    I've seen a used 10-22 for 450 and a 50mm 1.4 for 300ish. Those are the 2 I'd look at right now. Maybe a 85mm as well. Obviously I can't buy all right now.

Ok guys, I am in way over my head. That pic I took last week, of the lights and the mountains, one of the people that has to do with the convention center has asked if they can use it for advertising. I am super excited, but have absolutely no idea what I am doing. Anyone have any insight? What do I need to do to protect the image? Prices? Anything else I need to do? Again, way over my head.

Make sure at the end of the day it's still "your" image and you can do with it whatever you want.

Research the company and some prices but don't be afraid to ask too much. ha I have absolutely no idea what to ask or how this all works either but I was reading under a guy's photo on Flickr the other day that he got offered $700 to use one of his photos for a book cover so don't think in the $50 range ha

Hopefully someone who knows more can chime in soon for ya.

I'd get the 60D personally. You can grow with either but that may take you a little farther before wanting anything else. Here's a little quick comparison of specs: http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-Rebel-T4i-vs-Canon_EOS_60D

Also, with the 50mm, don't rule out the 50mm 1.8, while having the 1.4 is nice the cost to gain ratio isn't for everyone. I'd find a used 1.8 for way cheaper if I were you.

    I'd get the 60D and a 50mm 1.8 and grow from there.

On a side note: I picked up ten rolls of TMAX 400 today for $10. They're typical 6 something a piece at the local shop here so I saved myself about 50 some dollars :D

    i agree with this.

I have the 1.8 and its a great lens. Plus only 120 new..haha the 18-135 i also have and its a nice lens too for a kit lens.

    NICE!!

Never short change yourself. Make sure you get the credit you deserve. Other then that, go for it haha

Mike will be the best resource on this, hopefully he checks in soon.

oh. figured it was refurb since he posted it was a while ago.

    Still.

I can't even remember the last time i used the warranty on anything i own..

If it was cared for good and has low shutter count..i see nothing wrong with taking the chance.

    Buzzard would you buy a 35mm f2 for 250, a 10-22mm for 450 or a 17-40 L for 500 to go along with the nifty fifty?
