Everyone of the fabricating companies out there started small. The difference is they refused to give up. That's why they are now bigger companies. The deck is not stacked against you anymore than it is for someone else.

I suggest you branch out into other products. If you think you will be making a sustainable living to start with, just producing shit for Tacomas, you are sadly mistaken. Play in the Tacoma market, but find another avenue of fabrication to pay the bills.

Doing a small business is scary. Especially if you have to invest a good amount of money into it. More small business close shop than there are successful ones

agree 100%. everyone starts somewhere. however, with offroading being far more "mainstream" nowaedays, it is definitely harder for some of the little guys to raise up, than it was for a company like all-pro, who started 30 years ago, when they were essentially one of 2-3 manufacturers for toyota off road parts.

what you have to do is decide if you are doing it for fun, or to make some serious money/a living. if you are planning on making a living or a career off of it, you'll need to make some big sacrifices at first, work 14 hour days, and take some pretty serious risks. the barriers are easily overcome though, with the right attitude and skillset.

I however, have no aspirations of doing such. when i get back into a place with a garage, i'll just take on projects as i please. if i have an 8 month waiting list, fantastic. if i don't have a customer for haf a year, oh well, just means more me time. I do it for fun, and because i saw a gap in the market for "non cookie-cutter" equipment. the day i stop enjoying it, is the day i'll stop doing it.

Also remember, while profit margin is important, it's not the be-all to end-all right now. Lower your expectations for large profits (not saying you have them), and instead absolutely flood the market with your work. Even if it means you have to lower costs.

At this stage in the game be a trend setter and get enough of your work into the market so people can see it. It would help if you would get some advertising and stickers for people to display. While a symbol is great, right now you need your companies name displayed. NIKE didn't start with a swoosh, they started with NIKE. Now their symbol is synonymous with with their product.

But all in all, it's better r for him to start smalls with a small number of orders. Vs having a long wait time and people calling every other day asking where is their product. Especially when he is by himself.
