The dipstick is the worst dip stick I've come across in my driving life, across a dozen platforms. All I can say is "You've got to be f%^&*ing kidding me"

Any ideas to make it better?

    thanks for the short rant!

I recently had the same experience. Unbelievable that Toyota messed up such a basic piece that has been around for so long. I was amazed that 25+ year old Honda right next to my new Tacoma has things on it that or needed (like a dipstick) that work perfectly, but Toyota f'd it up.

Some people have sanded the end.

What I finally settled on doing (even though I can't believe I have to) is leave the dipstick out for at least 10 minutes, longer if possible. Insert and pull read carefully. If you reinsert and immediately pull the stick, it will not read correctly. You have to wait another 10 to insert and pull again.

What seems to happen is when you pull the stick oil rubs off on the tube on the sticks way out. Which then transfers back on the stick when you check again.

Good luck and know many feel the same way. You have to love them engineers.

There's nothing you can do. Just have to wait for the oil to settle.

Must be a Toyota thing. My Yaris' dipstick is plastic from top to bottom. But at least it works lol.

Check it first thing in the morning before you start it if it is fairly level where you park.

I had the pre tacoma 95 P/U (22RE) prior to the 12. I was amazed at how many features were the same as my 95.... but not the dipstick...that needed re-engineering to decrease its effectiveness.......to almost USELESS..... Arrrrrrrrrrrrg

I will say that the first time I pulled it I was like what the heck, only two little dimples?!? But honestly it's a dipstick. The concept is the same as if it's textured between the dots or not. Its not that big of an issue
