I was replacing a bulb in my climate control, anyway there is one more click on the climate control, it is one click past the defrost function.Athough you can only access this with face plate removed. The stops on the knob and faceplate won't let you use this function. Maybe a little Dremel work you could. Anyway the last click turns off a/c compressor, while everything else works as it should. This is on a 02 taco trd xtracab cab 4x4. Anyone else ever noticed this:confused::confused:

yea, i've done this to my truck. Just file down the little stop. works great if you want air going to the windshield but prefer not to have the compressor running.

First day I bought my truck I pulled the knob off on accident and noticed that. And I forgot about it until just now...

    wait what??

"turns off the a/c compressor"? are you saying that the a/c compressor gets kicked on every time I turn the dial to defrost?

what about vehicles that don't have A/C? from the factory.

This makes no sense and is not true by the way. When you turn it to defrost, it blows hot air. Well, I guess if you had it on cool, it would blow cool air. But when my windows are frosted *in the winter, when it's cold*, I have the temp on hot, and it blows hot air from the window defroster vents.

When you turn the dial for where you want the air flow (upper vents, footwell, mix, or defrost vents), it is either cable operated to open certain vents and close others, or it is vacuum operated to achieve the same purpose. There isn't some wiring to the A/C compressor, that's what the A/C button is for.

pretty much what you're saying is: it's cold outside. and it is cold in the vehicle. the windows have frost frozen onto them. let me blast more cold air onto already cold glass to achieve....? less frosty windows?

Let me rephrase that...almost every MODERN vehicle is like this.

A/C has much more to do than blow cold air. It's effectively a "de-humidifier". Most cars equipped with A/C will automatically run the compressor when the defrost option is selected for two reasons, one is to keep the compressor from freezing when it's cold outside, but the biggest reason is so you're not blowing hot, moist air onto your windshield, therefore fogging it up even more.

Oh, and if you're using your defroster only to melt ice on your windshield, then that's not really what that feature is for. It's mainly to keep the windshield from fogging up.

This, if you really want a in depth/technical explanation i believe chris 4x4 has a big long post here on TW with a bunch of info on why it's standard for the AC compressor to kick on when turned to defrost, i'd look for it, but i have class in the morning and should be headed to bed.

Fast speed go out start your truck ,put your climate control on defrost and you'll see the ac compressor cycling. Its not all the time unless ac button is pushed . Then you'll see what I'm talking about. Tha ac cycling dries out the air coming through the heater to prevent fogging of your glass,it also keeps the compressor seals lubed. And the refrigerant moving. Hope this explains it better for ya.

You can buy 2014 model vehicles without A/C. I guess those guys are just gonna have to drive around with foggy windows all the time the huh?

Edit: you can buy 2014 vehicles in the U.S. without A/C

I read some time ago that not only does it dehumidify the air , by running the AC during defrost,it also helps by providing needed lub.(Freon) to the AC bearings, during a season when the AC not usually used/lubed!

 do you not get it? yes it will defrost without AC, but the AC helps it. and yes, while you can buy a new car without AC but its not a very good car

    the traveler has it right.

A moderator or TC Bob (the guy who created TW) are the only people who can sticky it.
