There are some "small" changes that they hope will make the racing better.

All I've really heard is the rear spoiler going from 4" to 4 1/2"; ride height will not be inspected before or after racing, and drivers will be black flagged for tandem racing too long. I'm sure some other changes will be made for the 1.5 mile tracks.

This clip came off of one of DW's articles-- "One of the biggest things I am happiest about going into 2014 season is there aren’t major changes to the car. I mentioned last week or so that these teams have gone through two consecutive years of major changes. We now have a year under our belt with the Gen-6 car and two years under our belt with the fuel injection. 2014 is only bringing some tweaks and I know there are a lot of happy folks in those race shops over that.
These tweaks and minor changes don’t affect the superspeedway races at Daytona and Talladega. However there now is a minor spoiler change for the superspeedway races. Last year NASCAR lowered the spoiler height and quite honestly I thought they over-did it. Those cars are a little shaky in traffic, so this coming season they are adding more spoiler back in there and I believe it will make the racing better.
So just minor tweaks across the board and again, that’s a good thing. These teams now have a full year under their belt with the Gen-6 car. They have a baseline of what the car likes and doesn’t like. I’ve said it all year that there is more potential with this car. It’s just waiting for the teams to catch up to it. We had nineteen track records and seventeen different winners over a thirty-six race schedule."

But that is just the thing, If you blow and engine in the first race of the chase, you are OUT. No chance to "do better" to win #2 or #3.

Huh? You aren't out, you still have 2 other races to try and win or get top 5 to put you in the next round of 12 drivers.

How do you figure? #1 isn't an elimination race unless I missed something about DNF's.

Maybe I missed something. Or maybe the article I read was wrong. What I read was that at the first race, all chase driver's points were reset to equal. Then after the first race, the bottom 4 scoring drivers were eliminated. If that is incorrect, then I would be happy to hear that.

It is after the first round of 3 races, 4 drivers are eliminated; not the first race.

This! 4 are eliminated after race 3,6, and 9.

And that is why this new format is nothing but a pile of shit. How can a man who didn't win one race be the champion? Also, NASCAR claims they are adding more emphasis on winning, well then explain this: A driver could (hypothetically) win the first 35 races, every single one of em. Then go into Homestead with the 3 other drivers in the "Final Four". He could come in 2nd place while one of the other 3 drivers wins the race. That guy who won 35 races that year just lost the championship. Please explain how that is in any way adding emphasis on winning.

Y'all watch it, if America's boy Dale Jr goes into Homestead in the Final Four and gets spun out or involved in a wreck after having an outstanding season and/or Chase, fans will cry for a change. Heck if any driver other than Jimmie loses the championship at Homestead after having a standout season, it'll be a mess. I truly belive NASCAR changed this to make it harder for that #48 to win his 7th.

That's what they said the other 3 times they've changed the chase, yet 48 keeps winning, and 48 would've won his 6 under all formats but 1 (number 4 I believe). The example you gave would be a drastic over exaggeration. This new format is exciting and it's got your attention, which is what nascar and it's drivers wanted. So enjoy it!

Hate to be a Debbie Downer but I can't enjoy it too much. I mean the winner of the 500 is in the Chase. So at that point I'd spend the rest of the season trying out formats getting ready for the Chase. There's no reward for winning any more than one race other than prize money. I'd like this format a lot better if there was more recognition for winning races.

this has happened several times in the past hasn't it. I know terry labonte won a championship without winning a race or do I have that wrong?

I see what your saying, once you win a race, then you know that driver is in the chase so why try. But those drivers also have opportunities to play spoiler for the rest of the field which could cause some issues. I think we just need to let the season ride and see how it goes, could be great, could be awful.

Part of the reason a driver would still need to try harder, even after a single win, is for sponsors. Sponsors want exposure. So you need to keep your car up front and competitive. I still of course hate the new format. It is too easy for a good driver to get bumped out.

I mean obviously elite drivers aren't going to lay down after they get a win, but you can't help but wonder if they are going to test a new setup at say Martinsville, Dega, or any other track they race at twice, once in the chase.

I'm with you, I hate this format. It's not bad at all, until you get to Homestead. If they would make wins count for something in the Chase, other than a next segment advancement, then I would support it more.

I looked it up, no driver has ever won a championship without winning a race. Ned Jarrett, Bennie Parsons, Matt Kenseth, and Bill Rexford all won a championship with 1 win. Both of Terry Labonte's championships he had 2 wins.
