That sucks about the empty gas bottle.. I've never checked the pressure at the LWS.. there's a pretty considerable weight difference between an empty/full bottle. Hope you didn't have to drive too far to return it.

I'd say maybe slow down your travel speed a little bit, and focus on tying in the top and bottom edges of your welds.

Pushing or pulling?

Def wouldn't be welding next to that box of tires..

Thanks! Yeah, I was pissed, but the shop was not too far away. They cylinders I have worked with before (not welding) were AL, so I was not too sure on the weight.

Not sure in those pics, I was swapping around quite a bit trying to figure out what worked best.

What do you mean by tying in top/bottom?

LOL, I swapped everything to the other side of the table after that pic.

 

Make sure the puddle is washing up to the top and bottom. So the weld lays flat and not just high in the middle

 

We have had good luck using Greyhound busses. The only thing bad is there has to be someone waiting when it gets to your town.

 

Largest thing I shipped was a Tundra door. You might give the nearest office a call.

 

Fastenal also does large freight shipping for reasonable prices. Not as good as UPS...but cheaper.

Yeah...And you depending on how much/often you'll be shipping uship.com can work out to get you a piece from here to there on occasion.

 

Anybody weld in the Baltimore area? Might Need some sliders welded onto an 06 DCSB.

 

That's bc most of them don't know that they ship freight. I use Fastenal for a lot of things, you simply cannot beat their rates.

Last shipment was a 1979 Ford Dana 60 (550 lbs) that went from here (northwest Indiana) to Texas for $150 picked up from my house even.

 

I had the same problem when I asked about shipping freight. Do you just talk to the manager then?

Here's one of the first welds I ever made. It was with an oxy- acetylene torch with a welding tip. Not very good, but I was proud at the time .

 

Where did you learn to weld? I see you're around Clemson. I've got a brother in the welding program at TriCounty but I don't think they teach oxyacetylene there.

 

I learned through the ag mech department at clemson. We had to take a fabrication class freshman year.

 

For all of you who do a lot of fab work, cutting tube or angle stock, etc...

What saw do you recommend and why? I'm going to have to dust off my welding skills and do some of my own fab if my overland build is ever going to get done, and I'm going to need a quality saw to help.

 

I've used anything from the harbor freight chop saw, Milwaukee dry cut chop, to a northern tools 12" horizontal band saw. Depends on what you are going to be fabbing.....

 

A lot of 1-2" tube, angle iron, max 2"x2" square stock. If I design anything with plate I'll send that out to get cut.
