Haha you sound like my parents on that last part. I wouldn't hesitate to discipline my kids either. I'm actually surprised it's still legal to spank kids in school... Had my share of spankings from parents and school, don't have any anger towards them for it either.

Well the responsibility falls on the parents, does it not? Not talking about you specifically but there are a ton of parents out there who neglected to instill on their children that they need to have a good work ethic and drive if they want to go anywhere in life.

Some other thoughts on points people made in this thread regarding people being on their phones everywhere:

I just think it's funny that baby boomers call this generation lazy, unemployed, etc when the baby boomers are the ones who are responsible for the economic crash, the flooded market of college graduates and no jobs, and pollution throughout the country because they were looking to make money whether it be industry, housing bubble, etc. It's interesting to me.

I was at the tail end of when, if you screwed up and your parents weren't around, another parent would step in to pinch-hit, whup yer ass, AND call your dad so HE kicked your ass for being a dipshit while he wasn't around.

Honestly, I think every male should get a solid beating one time before he's allowed to drive. I don't mean a hospitalization type beating, I mean a 'lip off to the wrong guy and get an ass beating' beating.

Haha if I got in trouble at school, I'd get licks. Then when my dad got home I'd get licks again.

Last post first page, haven't made it further than this yet but DING DING DING WINNER!

Everyone is so sheltered and this whole participation trophy shit needs to stop. Kids no longer understand the value of hard work and dedication. Also known as blood, sweat and tears. The wooden spoon to my ass and doing chores was part of growing up. Now it's considered child abuse. Dafuq!!!???

Well face it, they ARE lazy. It shouldn't matter how you are raised. If you wish to become a productive member of society, get off your ass and DO something!! (not directed at you, just lazy people in general) What pisses me off to no extent is the whiners who complain that there is no job market, or that they don't have any money and can barely afford to buy food....These are the SAME people who play the lottery with their last dollar, or pass up on a job because they feel they are "above it". I had a good education and plenty of job skills, but when the shop I was working for closed, and I wasn't able to find a job at another shop within 2 days, I took a job as a janitor at night so that I could put food on the table for my kids. Then when I got home I took a shower and spent until lunch GOING to shops and looking for a job. THEN I would get some sleep before my shift that night. It's about taking PERSONAL responsibility. And you can't sit there and blame the condition of the US on what our GOVERNMENT did. I didn't vote for the SOBs. And besides, the US has been screwed up before (remember the 20s) and the generations that followed didn't complain about it. They just FIXED it.

Not all of it can be complained on the government. The whole financial crisis and housing bubble was based on the fact that companies where giving people loans that they knew they couldn't be able to pay, and people taking loans for things they knew they would never be able to pay back. Society has become dependent on debt and I personally will do everything I can to not end up that way. I do agree that there are a ton of people who don't go out and get a job because they believe they are above them. There are also a ton of people abusing the system.

Much of this does play in part of how someone was raised though. I know a ton of people raised with a silver spoon in their mouths and expect something for nothing. My parents on the other hand raised me to bust my ass off and be thankful for what I have. Both my parents were polish immigrants who came into this country with nothing. My father came over when he was 18 and my mom when she was 7 and did everything they could to teach me how to work hard and survive on my own. They could have bought me cars, paid for my college, etc. but they didn't because they knew if I worked for it all myself i would succeed much better than if things were just given to me.

The Feds made banking regulations that mandated the lenders give sub-prime mortgages in an effort to put low income Americans into homeownership.

Not saying that inexperienced rookie "investors" didn't take advantage of the easy money, and that every idiot with newfound paper equity in their home didn't also gobble up that easy money to buy a new Escalade or 50k bass boat...

But the government started the ball, and as usual...politicians rarely see what may happen when it starts to roll downhill.

I'm split on this. Personal fiscal responsibility is an actual thing. My broke ass could have secured a mortgage making 40k/year, but I knew I couldn't float the payments alone. Now that I'm much more secure it's time to shop the market.

Governments mandating loans to those who would otherwise fail means testing is poor policy. The banks turning around and bundling up these bad loans in order to make profit off the entire mess is just as bad.

In a lot of ways all parties are culpable in one way or another.

Yep if you earn it you appreciate it more than it being given to you.

On another note, I never got hit really hard with it but my parents used to wave a universtiy of geogia fraternity paddle at me threatingly. If I really got whooped it was with a belt or hand.

They are but with tube/tire combo, not called big wheels anymore? Not sure on that. Nitro Circus was using them to jump gaps between two buildings.
