X 2 ^ I would like some feed back on this. I am thinking of ether going with these or the LEDs. I would rather go with these if they truly work. Please share any findings.

I think the bulbs are mounted to close in to the lens...

    Mods? Yes, oh yes..

Just to add to the discussion a bit, hope this helps.

2014: DCSB, v6, Auto, OR, entune navi
2200mi od, so lenses/housing still have that new car smell :)
Bone stock electrical, aside from the fog lights (35w HID) anytime mod, and map lights (LED) with dome light mod.

3 Wires for bulb socket, Sylvania 4157NAK:

    Socket Internals:

Testing with the multimeter, pin 3 was always ground.

    DTRL: 1=13.6v 2=0v
    DTRL + Turn Signal: 1=3.6v-7v (alternates) 2=0.02v

    Parking Lights: 1=13.6v 2=0
Parking Lights + Turn Signal: 1=3.7v-7v (alternates) 2=13.7v

    Headlights: 1=0 2=13.7v
    Headlights + Turn Signal: 1=3.6v-7v (alternates) 2=13.5v

Strange how it changes the current depending on the mode. Could the bulb be in backwards, forcing constant current while in DTRL through the wrong filament, causing more heat? They would still function the same. My 2 cents, change is available.

So when your parking lights or headlights are on, your DRL/Turn signals are also on? That is the only time pin 2 goes hot.

The 3.6-7v reading is a function of the sampling speed of your multimeter. An analog meter would show a swing from 0 to 13.7

Just buy jumpers LED's, do the white/amber on signal only mod with them while you're at it :)

Agreed, the multimeter is a $20 cheapometer. So that would make sense as the filament goes off and on, not dim to bright which what I see when the bulb is plugged in.

Mod sounds interesting, will have to look into it. It would be nice to have just a normal switchback setup to have white led for a running light and ambers for the turn signals.

Ok I called there 800 number and asked them about the built in resister and the guy reassured me that it will take care of the fast-blink. So I took the plunge . I will see how and if it works and I will let you all know !! ;)

Ive had Jumpers Leds in the DTRL ever since I replaced my electrical sockets on both sides as they were completely burnt . They have been working for almost a year .Although they are much much more expensive and not as bright as some other LED alternative competitors , at least they still function . No more melting headlights :D

Ordered a pair... I've had the DRL kit for over a year but have been worried about my lenses.

Just curious... Is this just a problem with the 2005-2011 model years with the older style headlights or is it happening with the 2012+ years as well? It looks like older one's but then again that may be just due to the age and amount of hours on the drl's.

    Tacoma Guy,
Please let us know how those LED's work out.

I've wanted to do the DTRL mod as my truck doesn't have them now but I haven't done it in fear of the melting issue. I'd love a bright LED replacement bulb.

A group of locals could get together and do the swap.
Rather than cutting the green wire, just yank the harness and flasher from the DRL truck, and trade that for the flasher and jumper/plug from someone with a non-DRL truck.
You get "factory" non-DRL and he saves $100.

Ok guys here is an up date. Got the lights today and they are 1/2in to long. They are so long that it wouldn't even go in all the way to thread the socket in to hold it in place. So now I will be calling them tomorrow to see what they say. So now its back to the drawing board.

Damn. I didn't know all this dialog was happening since my last post. For some reason, I have not received any emails about new posts!?!?

At any rate, this sucks that they won't work. I have decided to go with a 3057 bulb for now. I know its only a couple watts less, but every little bit helps, right?

I have ordered a new set of DEPO lights to replace the burnt stock ones. Next step will be LEDs with an electronic flasher instead of the stock one. Maybe that will work??

Toyota sucks on this!! Rock solid truck...weak as hell lights!!
